No smells. The company changed the material and the mat does not emit any odors at all.
I use this mat daily with the accessory Hi - Lo switch on Lo. It's on all day long and has been a great product.
I hope that the older reviews won't scare new customers away.

Nearly eliminate any "new tire" smell by scrubbing both sides of the mat with soapy water and a bristle brush before first use. This eliminates surface oils. Also, to make the temperature adjustable, obtain a plug-in lamp dimmer (about $15). Product works great and is very comfortable.Customer Review: Hi-Lo Switch not needed

I love my Cozy Toes. Have not noticed any odor as some have reported. I do disagree with the reviews stating that it gets so hot you have to order the hi-lo switch. I just received the Indus-Tool FW Cozy Foot Warmer. It is perfect for those long computer sessions! I must admit that I was nervous after reading the other reviews and I expected it to smell when new. There is no smell. This is a VERY GOOD product!
Be sure to get the temperature controller, especially if it's going to be used by a diabetic ( use on low only as any pad on high can cause foot injury to diabetics ).
If I ever want one again it'll be one of these...
