Tools and Hardware Reviews of Intermatic EJ500C Flush Mount Programmable 24 Hour TimerCustomer Review: No problems at all Summary: 4 StarsIt did the job for me very well. I used it to control our front lights. Easy to install. It took me half hour to install the timer which isn't bad considering you need to take out the existing switches and go up and down the basement steps to switch off/on the electric supply to the room. The instructions were fairly straight-forward. I spent more time also in aligning the timer with the panel opening as it was a challenge to stuff the hard wires from the building back into the socket as there wasn't enough space left by the switch housing. Seven different program settings with DST recognition is great, though I am not sure if it recognizes the change in DST from this year on.
I like the variable timer part which gives outsiders the impression that someone is inside - it does this by randomly switching on or off the switch by +- 20 minutes. Sits nicely on the wall switch plate.
As mentioned in the instructions, this timer can't be used with compact florescent lights. So beware! The timer being fairly compact, the buttons to setup the timings is small and so are the readings. But you should be doing this only once in several years, so not a big pain for me. The panel does light up when you are setting up the time.
For the price, it is a great value. Now, I am buying two more of these.
Customer Review: Don't buy it Summary: 1 StarsI purchased my first EJ500 switch in May 2007. It lasted until October when it failed and was replaced by Intermatic. The replacement lasted one week. If the above doesn't convince you, I also had (past tense) an Intermatic ST01 in a different application, purchased from Ganesburg Electric. They replaced that timer three times -- that's four failed timers. They kindly, unlike Amazon, refunded my full purchase price. I will never knowingly purchase an Intermatic brand device again.
Customer Review: Broke after 1 week Summary: 1 StarsI returned mine today. It started flickering when the lights were on after one week. I bought this model to replace the older model which failed after 6 months. I now have a ST-01 which I'll try to see if it's any better.
Customer Review: INtermatic Flush Mount Timer Summary: 5 StarsI am very pleased with this programmbable timer wihch I used to replace an old timer that broke after only 3 years from the same company (Intermatic),but it wasn't a flush mount and I like this one much better. I liked it so much that I got another one to control my outdoor coach lights as well. They showed up within days and installation and programming was fairly easy by just reading the instructions.
Customer Review: Will upgrade with ST01C model soon Summary: 3 StarsPros:
- easy to install
- works
- looks good
Cons:
- CFL lights work only with a regular incandescent added. Otherwise lights keep flashing all the time and run hot even if they are off. I use 40W incandescent light to save cost which produces marginal amount of light. Apparently, timer tends to produce power spikes since I have replaced the incandescent light 4 times in 2 months period
- ST01C Intermatic timer which Amazon sells for $29.99 can control CFL and heavy loads, so even for $10 less it isn't worth to buy this one
