Tools and Hardware Reviews of Intermatic EJ500C Flush Mount Programmable 24 Hour TimerCustomer Review: Simple Installation, flush mount, better battery system Summary: 5 StarsI purchased this unit to replace an older Intermatic unit that stopped working. The old unit used one AAA battery that I was replacing once a month (though the literature said it should last a year). The new unit uses a series of three watch batteries that are only needed in the event of a power outage. Nice, but it seems strange to me that I'd have a battery backup to power the timer when it's likely that the power will be out to the items it's controlling... Anyway, the unit installed simply and flush mounts to the wall -- nothing sticks out. It works great and I don't have to replace the batteries all the time. Great price, too.
Customer Review: Good but difficult Summary: 5 StarsI love this timer. It does exactly what it says it does -- it adjusts for the changes in dailylight. It fits flush in the space.
Downsides are several but worth overcoming. Just be aware.
The writing on the unit is VERY small and hard to see.
The spaces are tight for fat fingers.
The unit fills the entire half of a switch box and in my case with new, thick wires and twist caps inside, I had to finagle and bend and adjust to make it fit the space. I had to remove the light switch next to it, use some of that space, and put the switch back in.
The programming is a touch confusing. So much so, that after I had given it my best shot, my wife had to do it to make it work.
But I'm glad I have it and would buy another the instant I had a need.
Customer Review: Works great ! Summary: 5 StarsI should not laugh, so I will not laugh! The dumb wall timer does not know what our Congress does with our clock indicated time. This timer just adjusts the on and off times as set by our rotation around the sun, no matter what Congress or anyone else declares as " TIME ". You set the timer once to turn on and off an outside lamp and it does it with no regard to human considerations, such as acts of Congress. It works great, has a bunch of features, and once set up is just there, requiring no taught. I've installed two in seperate homes with only some minor questions about instructions. There are better instructions than included in the package if you look online. If the controlled lamp burns out, just replace the lamp and all is well again. Think about the criticism in the feedback below, my feedback and then just buy it. My only complaint is that you must include atleast a 40 Watt normal incendescent lamp if you are also turning on/off additional lamps that are CFL's. This light timer can save you about $30 or more each year on your electric bill, pays for itself in less than a year, and may prevent a car prowl or burglary. Daylight Savings time does not change the earth's orbit, if you get what I'm saying! Just do it, and save a bunch of money on your electric bill and other costs!
Customer Review: Careful with compact fluorescents Summary: 4 StarsThe timer is electronic and works well with incandescent lighting. The reviews differ on using this timer with compact fluorescents, and the labeling states that it is NOT compatible.
Like many other electronic timers, it appears to "leak" current through the circuit even when off. That's ok with incandescents and the old magnetic ballasts, but CF with electronic ballasts flash when the switch is off.
A workaround if there is more than one bulb: include one ordinary incandescent bulb in the circuit (40 watt may be the minimum), and the compact fluorescents stop flashing.
Customer Review: Self adjusting timer Summary: 5 StarsI installed approx 5 timers prior to using this one , they all stopped working withing a few weeks of installation. The companies claim that they were installed incorrectly ... there are 2 wires , no guesswork ?. This one has been installed for almost a month and works perfectly. This model even adjusts for timezones. The installation and programming were very very simple. Great item
