Description of JS-1 Dozuki Back SawPerhaps the finest professional Dozuki back saw in America today, the JS-1 is an extremely fine tooth backsaw. Once cut, the wood feels and appears like it was hand planed. The handle is hand wrapped with a special braided cord and the ends capped with brass ferrules. The blade is made of high grade Japanese steel and correctly tempered for consistent golden color.
Tools and Hardware Reviews of JS-1 Dozuki Back SawCustomer Review: Dovetail Saw Summary: 4 StarsI bought this saw to work on hand cut dovetails. The quality of the materials used on the saw is fantastic and it is a very handsome saw. It is well balanced and feels great in my hand. I really enjoy using it and cannot believe the number of uses I have found for this backsaw. It has become a tool I reach for fairly often. The number of tpi allows for a quick and extremely smooth/clean cut. The unusually thin kerf wastes/removes very little wood and allows the saw to move quickly through the wood.
Unfortunately, the advantage of the thin kerf does create some concerns. First, I have found my saw blade to have a slight bow to it. I believe that it did not come this way, but I have in no way abused this tool (it is one of the nicer tools in my shop and I'm very careful with it!) The saw itself is very straight. Although the bow in blade is very slight, a tool like this that is used for precision work will need fixed. The good news is that I can get a replacement blade...the bad news is that the blades are expensive. Second, the thin kerf has me sawing more carefully as I am guessing I run a greater chance of breaking the teeth off of the blade.
With those things said, I would highly recommend this tool if you are in the market for a Japanese saw. It is a pleasure to see hanging with my tools when I walk in my shop and very very nice to use.
