Description of Roebic FRK-6 Foaming Root Killer, 1-Pound
Foaming Root Killer contains Dichlobenil which kills the roots and prevents new growth. New root growths from outside the pipe joints are retarded or inhibited when they come in contact with the Dichlobenil inside the pipe. Foaming Root Killer self foams on contact with water. The foam acts as a carrying agent, putting the active ingredient in contact with the tree roots above the flow. Easy to use. Let's be clear here... most of the negative reviews for this product are from people who are using it after major root growth has already occurred and is blocking their line. If this happens, you're going to have to cut them out. This product is a PREVENTATIVE product, to be used after the line has been cleared or before a problem ever happens in the first place.
If you live in an old house, it helps to get your sewer line scoped by a plumber and watch while it happens. This way you'll know what your sewer line looks like and gain an understanding of any possible root problems (hopefully before a full obstruction).
My house has clay pipes with some form of medieval (circa 1940s) concrete holding them together. These junctures are where my roots grow in. So after paying to cut out the roots and them scoping the line, I picked a root killing product that would prevent root growth into these concrete junctures. This happens to be that product.
I use it once in late winter, after we get our first thaw. Then I use it again in the spring at the height of the wet season. Then I use it again in the fall.
This may be considered paranoia-induced overuse, but prevention costs less than damage control by a large margin, and requires very little effort or stress. This is a big deal in my book.
I should also mention that I used a copper sulfate root killer in the past and it certainly kept the roots at bay. This one seems to be a more efficient killer due to the foam, which kills the roots at the top of the pipe and not just the bottom. It also was specifically designed to keep roots out of the concrete in the first place.
Be sure to follow the directions closely as this product is very caustic and messy if not applied properly. Learn about your house, follow the seasonal patterns of your area, apply the product as directed, and you'll be fine.
