Tools and Hardware Reviews of Firex/Kidde 4618 Hardwire Ionization Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup

Customer Review: Works Fine but Some Occasional Beeping Issues
Summary: 4 Stars

Replaced 3 older models with these. We have had one time that we had beeping that we could not stop. We changed batteries, did a reset, unplugged, etc. Finally, somehow it stopped and we have had no issue since then. It could have been some other issue, but they work fine now, are stylish and loud enough to wake anyone.

Customer Review: Sigh
Summary: 3 Stars

I have five of these linked through the new house, and they work well.

How do I know this? They go off when you cook ANYTHING. I don't have an alarm in my kitchen at all, but whenever we cook anything, they somehow pick it up and the whole house goes off. It's driving me insane. I guess if you want safe, this is your best bet. But have fun waking up at 2am to a screeching house because someone wanted to make a late night snack that didn't produce any smoke!

Customer Review: yep, chirps uncontrollably
Summary: 2 Stars

Yes, mine are beeping 8 months after installation.

what I really want to know is why my cheapskate idiot electrical contractor installed smoke alarms that work off of 120V but don't recharge the battery? The whole point of having wired smoke alarms is to eliminate battery maintenance as a cause of failure!

What I find amusing is if I just take the battery out the beeping goes away. How this got past the fire code inspectors I have no idea.

Time to find something that is actually zero maintenance. Maybe I'll just buy 10 year lithium batteries rather than a wholesale replacement, but I expect this cheapskate smoke alarm will probably not detect the battery level correctly.

Customer Review: Chirps too much
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought four of these.
One chirps no matter what kind of battery is in it.
I am switching to the Firex 41216 that does not use batteries

Customer Review: A terrible protection device...
Summary: 1 Stars

I have used smoke detectors for over 40 years. This device and the device that it replaced, the ADC, are among the worst I have ever encountered. I recently replaced all seven ADC devices after only 3 years because of the high false alarm rates they exhibited. And I find it totally amazing that they ONLY false alarmed in the middle of the night (go figure). After installing 7 brand new FADC devices series 4618 AND checking EVERY battery that came with every device, I went away for a week. When I returned one of the devices was beeping 3 times every 30 minutes. There is nothing in the instructions or in the FAQ section of the Firex web site that addresses this. I removed the detector and replaced it with the #8 (spare) that I had purchased. It still beeps every 30 minutes. After removing the detector completely a different detector beeped 3 times. I will NEVER buy another Firex smoke detector.
PS the only star they got was for price.
