Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas Alarm with Battery Backup

Customer Review: Awesome product
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVE this carbon monoxide/ flamable gas alarm. We have 2 others, and this is to replace one of them. We had a scare a few months ago when our lawnmower's gas tank ruptured and dumped an entire tank of gasoline on the garage floor. At 3am we woke up because the whole house was full of fumes and the alarm was going off. It saved us from a potential explosion, and I won't go without one now. It is totally worth the money, and the battery back-up guarantees you won't end up with a problem when the power goes out. This product is a real life saver.

Incidentally, we have added one near the floor next to the kitchen. We put it there because we have a gas stove and a toddler, and Co2 and flammable gases are heavy. So this alarm will go off before anything happens to our baby if there are any issues with our appliances. It gives me real peace of mind.

Customer Review: Kidde Nighthawk Explosive Gas/CO Alarm Saved Me
Summary: 5 Stars

-----I was cleaning with 99% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) when my Kidde Nighthawk 900-0113 explosive gas/carbon monoxide (CO) detector went off. It was built to detect methane--Natural Gas--and propane, but I guess it detects anything explosive, fortunately. There was a lit pilot light in the room; the alcohol vapor did not reach explosive concentrations before the alarm sounded or I would not be typing this. The detector is five years old; I am not sure the CO part still works, but the explosive gas part sure does. I am ordering two more; I will mount one high up and the other low down, as some gasses--like alcohol--are heavier than air. "Isopropyl alcohol *vapour* is heavier than air and is highly flammable.... It should be kept away from heat and open flame. When mixed with air...it can explode...." --Wikipeda Free Encyclopedia. ---Jim

Customer Review: A must have for anyone with propane or natural gas heat
Summary: 5 Stars

I have worked as an industrial safety specailist for the last 30 years and have seen the devastation of a flammable gas explosion. This is my second unit that I have purchased; this one is for my daughter.

I can tell you that my first unit worked just as intended. I am a home wine maker and when transferring wine from one copntainer to another near the meter the alcohol vapors in the air set off the alarm.

Prior to my purchase of this second meter through "amazon.com", I could not, however, find this model of meter (capable of detecting both carbon monoxide and flamable gases) in my local Home Depot or Lowes stores, nor was it listed on the manufacturer's web site. I sure hope the manufacturer does not discontinue this combination flamable gas carbon monoxide meter. It is a must have product.

Customer Review: Saved our lives
Summary: 5 Stars

We recently purchased this device and last night, the alarm sounded and it said, GAS and the number 218. We went outside to get fresh air and my husband noticed a hissing noise near the street. Natural gas was pouring out of a crack in the pavement in the street in front of our house and seeping into our house. This was at 1:30a.m. We were not awakened by the gas smell, in spite of the additive that is added by the gas company. It was approaching the flammable situation and very dangerous. We became nauseated and dizzy after a few hours of being exposed to the smell after being awakened by the alarm. We are thankful to be alive. We bought this at a local Lowe's store and paid more than the other detectors, but it was well worth the extra dollars. We highly recommend this device.
