Customer Review: Kindly spoke: Explosive gas "false" alarms may be wine, alcohol, solvents--clear the room, vent the alarm, reinstall
Summary: 4 Stars

"No reason to get excited"--

many of these grievous complaints may be caused by true "flammable" solvents, like the Old Spice complaint from one reviewer (probably alcohol in the toiletry's compound).

You "fix" the alarm by clearing the room by ventilation and "venting" the alarm by taking the alarm out into the outside air for about 10 minutes.

The question for the user is whether you want an alarm that sensitive?
If I had a baby in the house I would say, yes I do.

Adults, drinking wine or using solvents, maybe you don't. Your own nose will tell you when the solvent fumes are too intense, and as for wine, that's a bouquet issue anyway.

In any house, however, you need a carbon monoxide (CO) detector. That gas is odorless and it can kill you or at least make you real sick.

A friend had a CO detector go off, in their basement where their bedroom and their new baby's room were. Fire department came. Cause--the gas water heater "deflector" on top had tipped just a bit, causing a buildup of poisonous gas. That family is a believer now. So am I.

Customer Review: happy enough to replace it
Summary: 4 Stars

The unit I have was manufactured Feb. 2001. Last week the display read "ERR". As the manual advised, I called Kidde. The rep told me that these units should be replaced every 7 years which is why the ERR message showed. So, we got over 8 years out of ours! Hooray!

During these 8 years, the unit rang each time the battery died. We often had power outages, so this was an annoyance. The unit also rang when we had leaks. The gas company rep had a hard time finding the leak each time, especially since no one could smell the gas, but each time he persisted, and he finally found it. He was impressed with the sensitivity of the unit. It even rang once when the propane grill upstairs leaked, and another time when the leak was at the tank several yards from the house. The wind blew the right way and...

So, we feel protected by this unit, and probably saved more than its price in gas that would have otherwise leaked undetected.

However, don't count on it for carbon monoxide if you keep it at floor level for detecting gas leaks: I understand that CO rises, unlike gas.

Customer Review: Best Alarm with a few problems, but with a responsive company
Summary: 4 Stars

We bought this alarm about one and a half years ago. For a while we had no problems at all. It even detected a leak when the line that supplied the gas to our stove cracked. Then we started getting false GAS alarms in the early morning hours. They would happen about 3-4 times a week. After a thorough inspection, we felt certain that these alarms were indeed false. I called KIDDE after reading this suggestion from other reviews. The customer service rep, Kathryn, was very helpful, professional and concerned. She sent us a replacement within 10 days, and we mailed the defective unit back to her for inspection.

Almost all products can have defects, but very few companies actually respond in a professional, quick manner. There is no better alarm out there, and Kidde has proven to be a responsible company.

Customer Review: Cat Urine?
Summary: 4 Stars

I cannot vouch for the effectiveness of this item in detecting explosive gasses, however, it does seem quite capable of detecting cat urine. We had mounted ours about three or four feet above a litter box and if our did not cover after peeing in the box, the explosive gas alarm would go off. Simply relocating the detector to another outlet in the room solved that problem but we thought it was interesting nonetheless.
