Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas Alarm with Battery Backup

Customer Review: Very good product
Summary: 4 Stars

Very good detecting range, but the power supply unit overheats a little bit. Overall is exellent!

Customer Review: false alarms, but in it's defense it tells you so in the Instruction Booklet
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this unit because we have a pretty old gas furnace and don't have the money to replace it yet. Our HVAC service professional told us to buy one of these. It has been good letting us know if our furnace is giving off any Co2 fumes but like so many others have said we have had some false alarms with Gas portion. When we cook with wine,,false alarm,,,when we paint,,,false alram,,, The instruction book does say to remove the unit when doing certain things,,, but to be honest if a person did that you would probably never have it hooked up. The placement of the unit is also cumbersome. You can't place it in drafty cold areas or hot areas or near curtains or near the bathroom, Or too close or too far from your gas unit. You are probably getting the point. Separate gas detectors are usually placed up high and in most cases placed in the attic. You never get false alarms with these units because your wife's hairspray for example doesn't reach in the attic. I think it was a bad idea For Kidde to put this unit out and more importantly a bad idea for me to buy. I will get it replaced with separate units.

Customer Review: I must concur with all the claims of false alarms, but think logically before you freak out.
Summary: 3 Stars

So, once again, my CO/Explosive Gas detector has incited my anxiety by giving a false alarm. The culprit (Explosive Gas) this time, Old Spice (Not your father's musky scent) Body Wash! Now, this stuff is pretty potent, but explosive, I think not! It has also been set off before by my girlfriend's hairspray, my cologne, etc... Now, don't get me wrong, I guess I'm glad it's as sensitive as it is, but my point in writing this review is to tell others who are experiencing this problem not to freak out. Think about what may have triggered it, usually you will find it is some immediate and new source it has been exposed to. Unplug the unit, take out the battery, put it back in, reset it, oh and make sure you ventilate the area so the explosive "Old Spice" gas is gone. If the unit continues to go off despite taking these steps then you may want to take it to the next level and call your utility company. Anyhow, good luck, I hope that if I need it to it will save my life one day.

Customer Review: Cooking with wine sets it off!
Summary: 3 Stars

We have had this detector for 4 years with no problems. We have it located our basement furnace room. All went well until I tried a recipe for Coq Au Vin (Chicken With Wine). The first part of the recipe is the marinade - cooking the chicken for about 10 minutes in wine and veggies. The GAS alarm went off. I checked our furnace room and didn't smell any gas. We turned off the furnace and opened the windows. I called my furnace guy and he couldn't find any problems. We called our utility company and he used a gas sensor and didn't find any leaks. I figured it was just an anomaly. The next night, while cooking the Coq Au Vin, the alarm went off again. After several heated moments attempting to convince my husband all was well (HECK, you know when you have a gas leak!), I went online and read these reviews. Whew! I cook with wine/alcohol frequently, but this recipe required a full bottle of red wine. Well, now I know. Just wish I had read these reviews sooner.

Customer Review: Battery eater
Summary: 3 Stars

Even you plug this thing into the electrical outlet you have to put a battery in it for a backup in case of power failure. The thing justs eats batteries even when it is plugged in. After one month after putting a battery in it. It ends up chirping in the middle of the night to let me know it has a low battery. I thought I just take the battery out and plug it back in. No it continuely chirps even when it is plugged in, so I have to end up pulling the plug. That is the reason I bought it so I didn't have to buy batteries.
