Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kidde KN-COSM-B Battery-Operated Combination Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm with Talking AlarmCustomer Review: Ultimate Safety First! Summary: 5 Stars
After someone explained to me that "beeping" noises of smoke alarms do not always wake people (especially children), I looked into this `talking alarm'. It is amazing. Instead of that annoying `beep-beep', you hear either a vocal, "Fire! Fire!" or "Carbon Monoxide!". Not all smoke alarms will detect carbon monoxide and any firefighter, policeman or paramedic will tell you that carbon monoxide can be just as deadly. Plus, this kit comes with batteries and a DVD that shows firefighters in action. This is the kind of protection every family needs and at the price, it can't be beat. You can easily test it weekly and a small green light will tell you if the batteries are functional (you should change them every year anyway). When the batteries are low, the red light flashes and a voice warns you along with a 'chirp'. This is a no-brainer!
Customer Review: These are GREAT! Summary: 5 Stars
I have 4 of these in my house. 2 are in my children's room, my own room and the kitchen. I have to say these are great! I put the batteries in wrong and one of the alarms actually said "wrong batteries". I took a look and sure enough I put them in wrong. I didn't learn that time, and ended up putting the batteries in wrong again. The alarm didn't say anything but it constantly chirpped and even went off as if there were a fire. I thought I was having the same problems as some people wrote about the alarm constantly chirpping after installing it, as if the batteries were low. I finally took the thing down and noticed sure enough I put the batteries in wrong again. Once I put the batteries in correctly, the thing never chirpped again. I think this is a great safety feature. Everyone should have these in their home.
Customer Review: Great Price for Safety Summary: 5 Stars
Purchased three of these a week ago to replace old smoke-only alarm w/9-volt battery. The AA-battery is a big plus, since this size is almost universal in electronic devices. Installation was easy, however, there was a discrepancy on which screw holes to use for mounting, but this was rectified with a call to customer service.(Mount as shown on p. #15 of instruction book.) Also, you do NOT have to use tamper-resistant feature to install. (This option is for use in public areas, access by children etc.) Product-life is two (2) years greater than comparable First Alert model & it has an LED light showing it's "working properly" [not available on First Alert.]
If you're a NY State resident, it is now a law that homes w/fuel-burning furnaces etc. must have a CO alarm. This combo alarm is the answer.
Customer Review: Works great! Summary: 5 Stars
I installed two of these to replace two 15 year old alarms when I purchased my house. The original batteries have lasted 15 months and still counting, (not sure what everyone else is complaining about) Mine has never went off so maybe others eat batteries because they are set off occasionly?
This smoke alarm offers ionization sensing. Here are the two types and definitions of each (From Kidde website).
Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with fast flaming fires) sooner than Photoelectric alarms.
Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible fire particles (associated with slow smoldering fires) sooner than Ionization alarms.
Studies show both types will effectively detect either type of fire.
Customer Review: Lithium, Lithium, Lithium! Summary: 5 Stars
Having lived for 12 years in a three story (four if you count the basement) 103 year old National Registry Historic Home and each floor having multiple Kidde KN-COSM-B Battery-Operated Combination Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm with Talking Alarm I can say that this product has worked as advertised, lasted at least 5 years and so far has given us no difficulties. But the one thing I've learned is that the use of any AA battery that is not lithium questions the quality of this product. Non lithium AA batteries last at most for weeks but with lithium batteries you are looking at at least 6 months between those annoying and incredibly inconvenient "low-battery" alarms.
