We ordered 4 of these from Amazon to replace the ones we have in the house right now, which are probably about 20 years old and are ionization only. This is a good upgrade to have both types of sensors in a hardwired unit. I know they sell battery powered units with both types of sensors, but this is the first hardwired detector we've come across that has both sensors.
They were very easy to install. It took about 5-10 minutes per alarm. I kept the battery that came with it for now and I'll upgrade the batteries to lithium batteries when I need to replace these a year from now.

When our smoke/carbon detector started to beep every minute after replacing the back up battery, I discovered the error code stated the "detector was in an error state". That means it needed to be replaced because it had been in use over 7 years so it was time to replace it. Finding out what the error code meant was tougher than purchasing and installing this detector,especially since this was hardwired into a combination system of 6 other detectors. Had a First Alert carbon monoxide and smoke alarm installed. This unit failed, it was still under warrenty but after reading the bad reviews on this unit I decided to go with another manufacturer. I purchased the Kidde KN-COSM-IB because I was familiar with the Kidde name and it had good reviews. The cost of the unit from Amazon was about $37, which was about $9 less the Home Depot. The unit arrived quickly, was easy to install, had understandable voice alarms and has been working flawlessly for about two months. Easy to install. Although we don't have to use the interconnect feature where we live. Which is nice since the wife likes to "test" the one in the kitchen all the time when she cooks. I like the voice feature. So far no false alarms. All in all a great product especially for the price. I'm not sure why anybody would buy a detector without a battery backup and this one does come with that. The other version of this detector does not so be aware. The warranty only last 5 years for this vs the smoke detector's 10 year warranty so be aware of this.Customer Review: Seems to work

Fortunately, I have not needed to use this device in a real world situation. I test it periodically and change the backup batteries as needed and it seems to be ready to go if needed. It was easy to install and replace my old hardwire devices. This was pretty much the only combined hardwire device I could find at the time, but it fits the bill nicely. It is a great benefit that it talks to you to tell you what is going on in case you are a heavy sleeper and may be slow to respond to a beeping noise - even if it is ear splitting loud.
