This advanced smoke alarm has the ability to function as a stand-alone unit or in an interconnected system. The Kidde P12040 includes a test button, quick-connect power harness and offers a 10-year limited warranty. This alarm uses photoelectric sensing technology. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner that photoelectric alarms. Kidde strongly recommends that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help insure maximum detection of the various types of fire that can occur within the home. The Kidde model P12040 is a 120VAC powered alarm that includes a 9V battery backup to provide continuous protection during a power failure and included a quick connect power harness to make installation simple.

I bought this item a few days ago and I have not experienced any false alarms or anything out of the ordinary. I put this one next to my kitchen and have not had a false alarm from cooking yet. I initially tested this interconnected to 1993 vintage BRK smoke alarms and all alarms sounded, I don't know if this will work with newer BRK smoke alarms. I replaced those same vintage BRK alarms due to age with a different combination of interconnected Kidde alarms and they too alarmed when this alarm was put into test mode. You have about a 3 second delay when pushing the test button on any of the Kidde alarms and this procedure is in the instructions. This particular alarm is very loud. I have not had any midnight heart stopping alarms or chirps from any of my new Kidde smoke alarms. I would advise that you put the battery in other Kidde models and push the test button to activate the battery before attaching it to 120v house current. This should solve any chirping issues that many others have complained about in other models. I solved chirping issues on other Kidde models with this procedure. This model comes with the battery already installed and I pushed the test button for 3 seconds before applying 120v house current.
