I recently purchased this item as I am doing some updating in the kitchen and the "sink corner" needed some help. I have disliked my previous dish drainer from day one, as there is no support under the flatware caddy and when it starts to fill up, the whole rack tilts unless there are enough dishes in it to weigh it down.
As I have ALWAYS been happy with my KitchenAid appliances (2 mixers and a blender), when I saw the KitchenAid dish rack, I purchased it even though I thought that it just didn't look "right". The wire dividers that should hold up the plates looked too low to do the job but I was convinced that the KitchenAid people knew what they were doing. Was I ever wrong! I don't think they ever tried to use it, as the shortcomings are obvious immediately.
I found out that it is so bad that if I don't start loading it from the end nearest me (I set it up exactly as it was shown on the box), the plates, bowls, etc. would all just lay down flat. With loading it from the end, the end piece holds up the first plate, which holds up the rest of them. You cannot place a plate, bowl, or anything else upright in the middle without support from previous pieces.
I should have returned it but I am managing to use it if I load it carefully. However, if it starts to rust as other reviewers have mentioned, I will be replacing it with something other than KitchenAid (unless the design drastically changes).
The one star I gave it is for the lovely red color (it is much prettier than shown on line and does look nice in the kitchen) and the fact that it is substantial and doesn't seem likely to tip over like my last one did.
I am just glad that I purchased it at a wholesale club and didn't pay full price. I cannot recommend this item to anyone.
May 8, 2009-An update--After having used this item for a while, I am "kind of" getting used to its major fault and dealing with it. You just cannot set it up the way it is shown on the box. The plates have to be loaded "backwards"--with the back of the plate facing you--to get them to stand up in the rack. Then it is acceptable even though I think it is a strange way to do it. I tried turning the whole thing around but the cup rack was on the far side, which I found to be very inconvenient. And the plates blocked access to the flatware caddy if you hook it up at the back, which is the position I prefer.
So now I would give it one more star, but Amazon doesn't allow you to change the stars. Other than that, I'm still not thrilled with it but it's working reasonably well and does hold a lot of dishes.
