Customer Review: Oscillation and Wattage

This unit functions as described and warms up a medium sized room (13x20) with little to no difficulty. This has allowed us to maintain a lower household temperature while at the same time maintaining a more comfortable temperature in our immediate surroundings. While it lacks certain features such as a timer, it does provide the basics such as a high/low option and a thermostat (although another reviewer suggests that this is more of a timer function than an actual thermostat function - I cannot ascertain whether there's an actual thermostat or not). It is light weight for easy moving yet is solidly constructed. This is not a product for those looking for a silent space heater. Although not obnoxious, the sound is equivalent to a small air purifier/humidifier/fan on low.
My skepticism after reading comments about the perceived increase in costs caused by the oscillation function is what led me to post this review. To test the hypothesis, I measured the actual power draw while the heater was, and was not, using the oscillation function. I used a Kill A Watt power reading meter to do so.
On low, this unit draws 769-780 watts with an avg. 772. On high, it draws 1300-1325 with an avg. of 1308. While oscillating, the unit consumes 772-786 w/an avg of 775 while on low and 1308-1330 (avg. 1314) while on high. As the averages are best guesses derived from watching the variation of the Kill A Watt, I would speculate that oscillating consumes ~3-5 watts. Standing alone, this will not result in a perceivable difference in your utility bill. In fact, the oscillation function, if operated alone for 24 hours per day, 365 days a year, would cost about $3.32 per year (based on 7.57 cents per KWh). That's correct - $3.32 per year to oscillate non-stop all year long.
Due to the large variety of factors that affect an electric bill (wind, temperatures, storms, air drafts, frequency of doors opening/closing, hours that people are home, the number of people in the home at any given time, etc.) it is nearly impossible to quantify causal relationships without explicitly measuring the various appliances directly. This is a well recognized fact and has resulted in extensive standards for measuring the results of energy savings devices as sold on the industrial level.
Could the device run longer while oscillating as it is heating up a larger space? I doubt it. The oscillation effect is far too minimum (as a result of the low airflow) to displace the immediate surrounding temperature on which the unit bases its temp/timing function. Moreover, if these units do not actually have thermostats, the immediate surrounding air is of no consequence since it's actually a timer function.
In conclusion, there is no support for suggesting that running the oscillation results in significantly greater costs. It should therefore not be discouraged.
