Tools and Hardware Reviews of Lawn Boy 10640 20-Inch 6.75-Gross-Torque Briggs & Stratton Gas-Powered Push Lawn MowerCustomer Review: A REAL review Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this product from Home Depot, but my decision was largely based on reviews from Amazon, along with my own inspection and comparison shopping. If you'll notice, the majority of the reviews are 5 star, and in this I concur. Growing up, I worked in my parents landscaping company for over 10 years, so I am familiar with lawn equipment, and the various pros and cons of equipment design. I'll just say that for a residential mower (as apposed to one designed for commercial use), this one has great bang for the buck. Unlike some of the other mowers on the market, this one's entire functional deck is steel. The areas at the front and rear of the mower where the wheels and height adjusters attach is made of steel. Many mowers by Ariens, Poulan, and Yard Machines now have large plastic components for the front and rear of the deck. On this mower, the steel cage for the bag also locks easily and securely into steel brackets at the base of the handlebars. Again, you won't be relying on plastic channels to support the bag over the years. The overall deck shape is conducive to good air circulation and channeling of cut material into the bag. This mower also seemed to have a considerably wider range of height adjustment than most models I looked at.
The Briggs and Stratton engine...
While the plastic engine covers and some of the carburetor components have been updated for a more modern look, the core of this engine is essentially the same as the engines B & S has been making for decades, and that is a very good thing indeed. Properly maintained, a B & S engine can easily give over 10 years of reliable service. I know this not only from having been in the landscaping business, but the reason I bought this mower was to replace another that the deck cracked on. My old mower was over 13 years old, but its Briggs engine still started on the first or second pull and muscled through anything. I only ever put a $12 carb rebuild kit on it over the years. My brother has had his Honda mower in the shop at least once every other year since he bought it 6 years ago. I would completely agree with Consumer Reports that this mower is a best buy.
To address some of those 1 to 3 star reviewers...
When you review a product, please be realistic with your reviews. Don't unfairly punish a product for things that are only peripherally related to it.
Spilled oil in the packaging? Um, stuff happens sometimes. You actually say the mower is great, but it gets only 3 stars cause some guy in a warehouse was a little heavy-handed with the forklift and caused the included plastic oil bottle to leak? That's like saying a Lexus is garbage because it got splashed with mud.
Heavy? My 120 pound fiance had no problem pushing it when she decided to mow the grass last week.
Doesn't push straight? Um, it's a lawn mower, not a Lincoln Towncar. It doesn't have a fully adjustable front suspension like a car. And even if it did, it wouldn't matter once you start pushing through uneven grass and soil. The slight amount of drift you noted is a complete non-issue and should not be any reason for a two-star review.
For those that had more serious problems, your reviews are certainly valid and realistically reflect your experience with the actual product. If feel sorry for the guy who threw a rod. He really got the run-around big time. Unfortunately, mass-produced items can occasionally experience massive failure right out of the box. Sounds to me like the Lawnboy (Toro) reps needs to be retrained and have other options available to them. If it threw a rod from lack of oil, the internal components would have heat distortion, cracking, and discoloration, which any tech would have seen if they'd just dissembled the engine, instead of blaming it on the customer. If I were you I'd fight like hell till Lawnboy makes good on their warranty.
