Tools and Hardware Reviews of Life Gear LGTF38 LED Flashlight with LED Reading Lamp, NOAA Emergency AM/FM Radio with Alert and Weatherband

Customer Review: Don't Waste Your Time Or Money!
Summary: 2 Stars

Please avoind this item. I am not sure where the other reviews came from buut this is total junk! I actually thought I received a USED unit when I opened the first box....item was dirty, knobs and switches were worn, faceplate scratched. The replacement came in the same shape. The weather radio would not work on either and the FM would not tune on the first. There have to be better units out there. All of these need to be sent back to China!

Customer Review: Mediocre quality
Summary: 2 Stars

While the radio bands and alert worked fine, the LED flashlight and reading lamp did not work as expected. I was finally able to turn on the reading lamp if I raised the arm just the right way, but the flashlight never worked.

I returned this item for a refund.

Customer Review: 2 Defective clocks in a row. Do not buy.
Summary: 1 Stars

I got this in a Gold Box deal hoping for a good emergency flashlight for my car. It was hard to connect the rechargable battery. I then started testing it. Both lights worked well. The Weather Radio worked on the opposite setting the poorly written manual (with microscopic text) said to use. The regular radio was hard to tune, very bad reception.

The clock did NOT work at all. I tried using AA batteries, no difference.

I exchanged with Amazon, which was easy. They paid for the return postage, and sent a new one right away.

2nd 1 arrived with the rechargable battery floating loose in the compartment. I connected it and charged with the crank.

The display on this clock does NOT WORK either. This one displays 3 dashes instead of the time. Put in AA batteries, no difference.

Amazon's automated return made me call. The customer service rep was professional and courteous. They are refunding my money and paying for the return.

Life Gear should be ASHAMED to have such lousy quality control on an EMERGENCY use product.

Customer Review: Crank Power Does NOT Work
Summary: 1 Stars

As far as I'm concerned, the only reason to purchase a device of this type is the crank power feature. I can purchase AA battery powered flashlight that is 10x smaller and lighter than this thing that puts out better light. I can purchase a AA battery powered radio that is smaller, lighter, and has better reception than this thing.

So, the crank feature is all I really care about. Does it work? Heck NO. The biggest defect in this device is the "rechargeable battery" and its connection. It broke pretty much right out of the package. Second time I tried plugging the rechargeable battery in, the entire connection pushed into the device and broke. I'm basically left with two loose wires for a battery connection. Extremely flimsy wiring.

The rechargeable battery is a joke. Its one of those tiny little round batteries normally used in watches or key fob. Capable of powering a single LED. Definitely not capable of powering a radio for longer than 30 seconds.

Customer Review: Don't waste your money.
Summary: 1 Stars

Unit comes without an AC charger. The packaging states that you can ask for a "free" adapter, but of course, the customer is charged "shipping and handling" of the device; a $5.95 fee in my case, as opposed to a similar 6V adapter available for $2.97 at RadioShack.

The larger rechargeable battery pack that is shown in the direction has been replaced with a small watch battery (0.75" Dia, 0.125" thick) that exhausts itself entirely from a full charge in a few minutes with the LED flashlight as the sole load.

It may be unfair, but these two items strike me as evidence that Life Gear is more interested in making an immediate buck at the cost of any customer loyalty. Since there are cheaper alternatives with the same capabilities and better battery performance, I'd encourage others to shop around rather than being saddled with a Life Gear product.
