The secret lies in the secure, horizontally wall-mounted base and the ratchet system inside the towel holder. By allowing the roll to make incremental turns in just one direction, the ratchet holds the roll steady during pulling and tearing, thus preventing unraveling.
Three parts come with this towel holder: a weighted chrome arm that protrudes five inches from the wall (two screw holes are on a two-inch center; two 1-1/8-inch screws and two plastic sleeves are included); an 11-inch metal dowel that screws into the arm and features a bullet-shape tip; and a flexible wire cage through which the central dowel passes that conforms to the inside cardboard tube of a paper towel roll. The dowel and cage attach to the arm without tools, but a Phillips-head screwdriver (and possibly a drill) is needed for the wall-mounting. Customer Review: Great paper towel holder -part 2

I had been looking for a nicer paper towel holder to mount under my kitchen cabinets for some time. I just had my kitchen redone and needed a more upscale holder to match my new decor. My old unit was a squeeky plastic number which worked okay but didn't look very nice and also allowed you to unravel a lot of towels if you were not carefull as to how hard you pulled. I narrowed it down to this one and the Simple Human version. I chose this one as when I saw the Simple Human one it is quite a bit larger and looked more cumbersome and ultimately, I did not want to hang the other under my cabinets. I also was looking for some sort of limiting device to be built in and this one has the ratcheting mechanism. It does make a clicking sound when you tear off towels so if you are used to having no noise when you tear off a towel then this will seem loud but, it is not bothersome. I have gotten used to it and think of it as aural verification that the mechanism is working. I would now be disconcerted if I didn't hear it. It just doesn't bother me. I think this is a good product and looks sturdy and sleek. In reality, when the roll of towels is on it I can't even see the holder so much. I would recommend this product.
Review update - Dec 2010 - As I have had this for a few months now, I too, am experiencing the broken ratcheting mechanism. It gradually lost teeth until it finally quit stopping the roll from overspinning. I think they should make the mechanism out of metal, as one other reviewer suggested, so it will last. I would pay more for that. I still think it is the best design currently available for the money. I will buy another and see how long that one lasts. Here's hoping the company takes a hint.
