Tools and Hardware Reviews of Perfect Tear Chrome Paper Towel Holder, Horizontal Wall-Mounted

Customer Review: I don't do reviews...
Summary: 5 Stars

This thing is friggin' great! It works perfectly, even with the tempermental Bounty Select-Size paper towels, which always gave me two when I wanted one, and one when I wanted two. One-handed pulls are now a reality, with no rewinding, ever.

Simple to install (mine is under-cabinet, horizontal...just make sure that the screws you use are short enough not to penetrate the cabinet bottom...the supplied screws are only for wall mounting!). BTW, it's easy to take this thing apart to mount it so that you're only dealing with the small base...no springs go flying when you disassemble it and it makes mounting much easier.

The user-reviews here convinced me to try this...I always check for Amazon reviews, even if I am buying the item somewhere else. I'm a skeptic...but I'm now drinking the Perfect-Tear Kool-Aid, too. The review by the bartender convinced me...if this could survive in a behind-bar commercial application, maybe it could survive in my kitchen.

The only negative comment I could make about this product would be about its sound...the ratchets make a high-pitched kind of irritating noise...but, I think I will probably learn to love that sound.

Cheapest (with shipping) I found at the time of order was right here with Amazon, subject to change, of course. It wasn't available locally.

Like most things today, this item is made in you-know-where, but covered by USA design patents. An inexpensive and very satisfying product. I'm getting ready to order two more, for the garage and for the workshop.

Customer Review: Wow! It's great!
Summary: 5 Stars

You'd think it would be hard to get excited by something as inane as a paper towel holder. I originally saw this product in several mail-order catalogues, priced at 30 - 40 dollars. For the 10 bucks it's priced at here, it is WELL worth it! I work behind a bar and have two of this item back there - being a bartender I'm almost constantly wet from being elbow deep in the sinks. I hate handling things or making drinks with wet hands, so on a busy night I probably go through 7 or 8 full rolls of towels. I use so many, a customer recently asked if I was Obsessive Compulsive - not quite, but I like clean and dry surfaces everywhere around the bar. These holders have held up well, I thought the ratcheting mechanism might be cheaply made and eventually give out - no sign of that yet. The ratchet is well made and well balanced - not so much resistance as to force you to dispense a single sheet at a time, but enough that you can tear whatever you've pulled off at the perforation every time. It's also solidly built and handles abuse really well - when busy, I won't fuss with a delicate mechanism - everything gets slammed around and knocked around with considerable force. Towel rolls remount quickly and easily. I'm pretty rough on equipment and have broken most things behind that bar at least once. This product definitely holds up under the toughest commercial abuse. If you're a big fan of the oversized rolls, they may rub against whatever surface you mount this too, but it still works.

Customer Review: Still working great after five years; better for full-size towels than half-sheets
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had one of these for about five years, using it many times daily. It has never failed. The people who complain about the clicking sound it makes must have painfully sensitive hearing. By the way, the Amazon.com review by Ann Bieri is suspect, because she says the roll is allowed to turn in only one direction, which is not true. It turns in both directions; if it did not, the mounting options would be severely limited.

Three months ago I bought a second dispenser to use for half-sheet paper towels, which I use more often than full sheets. The dispenser works better with full sheets, never making me tear off more towels than I want, but sometimes it takes two hands to keep from tearing off more than one half-sheet. If I'm really careful about how I hold the sheet I'm tearing off I can always manage it with just one hand, but sometimes I forget. Anyway, I didn't take off a star for that, because the same would be true ALL the time with a conventional paper towel holder.

Both of mine are mounted vertically, which, as others have pointed out, works just as well as horizontal mounting and is included in the manufacturer's instructions - Amazon really should change the description. It occurs to me as I write this that they may fail more often when mounted horizontally because of different stress on the mechanism, but that's just a guess. Except for the very minor problem with half sheets, I could not be more pleased with mine.

Customer Review: Perfect - Could easily cost twice as much and still be a good deal
Summary: 5 Stars

I was extremely hesitant to purchase this item since it was 1/3 of the cost of other horizontal paper towel holders that I was looking at - but I am extremely satisfied. The package comes with two screws with drywall anchors. The idea of mounting something with only drywall anchors that will be tugged/ripped on daily sounds ridiculous to me so I put one of the bolts through a stud and used a drywall anchor for the other bolt position. Utilizing a stud for installation provided me with a very secure mount. From some of the reviews, it sounds like the instability issue was due to poor installation. If you tug on the paper towel holder daily, and probably at different angles, while using only drywall anchors, of course it will become unstable over time.

Another complaint I read was that the rod bends with the weight of a new paper towel roll. The rod is not 100% fixed and has a little wiggle room (~2 mm deflection), but the deflection does not change for me whether its empty or holding a new paper towel roll - once again, I believe user error has occurred or possibly a defective product.

Customer Review: Great item and replaced for free after years of use
Summary: 5 Stars

This towel holder is just great, allowing you to tear off a single sheet with one hand. You just have to remember to put the paper towel roll on the holder the right way so the sheet tears off at the top. I got mine three and a half years ago. For the last few months the rod holding the roll has been sagging down from where it connects to the mounting bracket. It finally came off completely and it wouldn't hold when I tried to screw it back into the bracket.

I called Lifetime Brands at (516) 683-6000 and navigated to Customer Service. An agent came on right away. They asked what company made the holder, but all I knew was Lifetime Brands as listed in the description here. I also no longer had the box which had the item number for this model. The agent patiently had me to go to their Pfaltzgraff site and walked me through identifying this model from their line of paper towel holders. It turns out to be Iten No. F1227000. The agent did not ask for any proof of purchase, just took down my information to send me a replacement. Great customer service!!!
