Tools and Hardware Reviews of Light Keeper PRO 01201 The Complete Tool for Fixing Miniature Light SetsCustomer Review: A letter to the inventor of LightKeeper Pro Summary: 5 Stars
This is the text from an actual letter that I wrote to Mr. Rich Frederick, inventor of the LightKeeper Pro:
Dear Mr. Frederick:
I just wanted to say thank you. My husband thinks you deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. In truth, your Light Keeper has kept the peace in our home this Christmas. I hope you don't mind me telling you about it.
About five years ago, we purchased a beautiful but very costly pre-lit tree. We justified the expense by reassuring ourselves that we would never have to buy another tree again. The first year we took the tree out of its box, there were just a few light strands (out of 25) that needed to be tweaked to get working. That wasn't too hard, and we did it the old fashioned way, by pulling out and replacing one bulb at a time until we found the right one. The next year, after dragging the mammoth tree out of storage and taking it out of its box again, we had more unlit light strands to contend with. So we went out and got one of those little light string trouble-shooting gadgets. You know the ones....you pull out a bulb, stick it into the gadget, and know right away if it was the bad bulb or not. That helped when there was more than one bad bulb in a strand. It was kind of a pain, but we were able to knock it out in two or three hours. You can see where this is going, can't you? Fast forward to last year. When we plugged the tree in, it was mostly UNLIT. 17 of the 25 strands didn't initially come on. I spent hour after hour trying to get them all working again, one day even spending the entire day from breakfast to dinner time working on those lights!! My family waited patiently (and then not so patiently) for the day that we could FINALLY hang the ornaments on the tree, something we always look forward to each year. Several times I debated just dragging the tree to the curb and letting it get picked up with the trash, but then I thought about how much we'd spent on it, and I knew I had no choice but to keep working on it. Finally, after toiling with those light strings for a week, it was done...or mostly done anyway. I had given up on ever getting two of the strings to work. Oh well, there were still 2,300 working lights, maybe no one would notice the 200 that weren't. A few days later I was at the store and came across your Light Keeper Pro. Mind you, I had bought two more of those little light string trouble-shooting gadgets over the past couple of years, and they still didn't make the job of fixing those pesky light strings any easier. I was skeptical when I saw that Light Keeper Pro, but thought "what the heck" and bought it anyway, wondering if it would be able to fix those last two stubborn strands on our tree. I tried it immediately after I got home, and nearly cried when both strands were lit within minutes.
Now let me tell you about this year. I had been dreading putting up the tree, because I knew it would probably mean another week of messing with the lights and begging my family to be patient with me. I hadn't forgotten about the Light Keeper Pro that I bought last year, but I also knew that some things were just too good to be true. Sure it worked on those two light strands last year, but could it really be that easy? Well, this afternoon my husband and I put up the tree. Plugged it in. Once again, about 75% of the tree remained unlit. Here we go. I grabbed the Light Keeper Pro. The first strand I tried lit up after just a few clicks. The second strand took several more clicks, but it worked, as did the third, and the fourth, and so on.....would you believe that within TWENTY MINUTES, the entire tree was lit??? Well, of course you would, but I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't been the one to do it. I was dancing around the house I was so happy! I immediately shot off an e-mail to all of my friends and family with a link to the LightKeeper Pro website, and I told them that yours is at the top of my All Time Favorite Products list. Your little invention has saved me countless hours, no DAYS of frustration, the cost of a new tree, and in all likelihood, you have saved my sanity! I still can't believe it was that easy, and I wanted to say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. I will actually look forward to getting the tree out next year! I hope you have a very Merry Christmas!
UPDATE: The letter above was written last year. This year, it was no different. Once again, the LightKeeper worked like a champ, saving me literally hours and hours of frustration. For those who are still unclear about how it works, let me explain. You have a string that doesn't light. Pick a bulb on that string. Any bulb. It doesn't matter. Pull the bulb out. Now you have an empty bulb socket. Insert that socket into the socket receptacle in the LightKeeper Pro. Push the socket all the way in. Then pull the trigger on the LightKeeper Pro so you hear it click. Pull it repeatedly until the string lights up again. Don't get discouraged if the string doesn't light up after just a few pulls of the trigger. I have had to pull it up to 20 or so times on some strings. Once you get the string to light up again, re-insert the bulb you originally pulled out. The string should be fixed. There may be some bulbs that aren't lit up, and if so, pull them out and replace them. Your string is now good as new. If you still can't get the string to light, there is a continuity issue. There may be a bulb not making contact on both sides of the line. I have only had this happen once. If that's the case, the LightKeeper Pro can also be used to test individual bulbs, as well as fuses, and I have used both of those functions successfully. If the LightKeeper Pro is still not solving your problems, please read the directions. It really is easy and very effective if you are using it the way it was designed to be used. I cannot recommend this product enough. If I could give it 100 stars, I would. This is the one product I will not do without again.
