Description of Lodge Charcoal Chimney StarterIf you barbeque or cook at all with charcoal you'll wonder what you did without one of these. Makes hot coals fast. Produces hot coals in 10 to 15 minutes. Made of galvanized steel. 6 1/2" diameter and 12" high Barbecuing has never been easier with the Lodge charcoal chimney starter. Rather than spending time standing over the grill trying to maintain a fire, this efficient tool allows the outdoor chef to ready the barbeque in about 15 minutes. Simply place two crumpled pieces of newspaper in the bottom section below the grate, fill the top section with the desired number of briquettes, and light the paper through the vents at the bottom. Once the coals are hot, pour them into a charcoal grill or Dutch oven, and get ready to barbeque. This quick and easy method eliminates the need for lighter fluid, a dangerous pollutant that also leaves food tasting of the substance. Made from durable, heavy-gauge aluminized steel, the 12-inch tall, 6-1/2-inch wide starter has a heat shield to protect the wooden handle from getting hot. No assembly necessary; one-year warranty. --Lea Werbel
Tools and Hardware Reviews of Lodge Charcoal Chimney StarterCustomer Review: Great...will never go back to lighting fluid..but it is a bit bulky Summary: 5 Stars
I picked this up at a local store because we like to tent camp and have recently gotten into Dutch oven cooking. At first I was skeptical of how well it would work since it is such a simple design. Well it works great, better than I expected. It was super easy to use from the very first time.
Load the coals in the 'chimney', crumple up some newspaper, and away you go. Once the bottom coals get going they keep the heat going up for all the coals to get going. In around 15 minutes we had beautifully glowing hot coals for our dutch oven. What a vast improvement over having to go to the cooking pit, throwing the coals down, getting lighter fluid, and then shoveling the coals off the cooking pit to the dutch oven. Here when they were done I simply poured out the coals for the bottom, put the dutch oven down, and then poured out some more for the top (we were baking it takes coals on bottom and top). Used it a couple more times since, with consistently good results...and no fluid.
Anyone who uses charcoal in the backyard or for outdoor trips or picnicing should have one of these. Easy, useful, produces great coals, and elminates the need for fluid. The one downside is it is a bulkier than a bottle of lighter fluid. However it is lighter so not that bad of a trade-off size/weight wise while camping. And no worries about lighter fluid spills and leaks.
