Let's hear it for the small inventions in the $5 - $50 price range that make life just a bit simpler with understated design and solid performance.
The Kamenstein Stainless Paper Towel Holder belongs to the genre.
Its virtues are simple: weighty quality, attractive stainless-and-black appearance, and flawless solution of a problem that wasn't measurably impeding humanity's progress in the first place but was worth addressing by sheer dint of repetition.
The reason Kamenstein ventures the 'Perfect Tear' moniker seems to reduce to two features. A vertical peg on the perimeter of the holder's wide base and the steady pressure-producing 'click' that exerts a bit of tension on the process of pulling off a sheet and then tearing it straight.
This wasn't rocket science. But life just became one infinitesimal degree less taxing. I say 'Hear! Hear!'.

This paper towel holder not only has been a welcome addition to our kitchen, it is a relief to have finally found one that works so well. I think this might be at least either the 4th or 5th holder we've tried over a period of years. A couple of holders kept falling over. A couple were too complicated. This one fits in comfortably (we didn't need a paper towel holder that made a statement!), keeps standing, holds the big rolls (I don't know what the other person who said it didn't hold the big rolls was writing about ... maybe it has been updated?), and the dispenser mechanism actually works. The rolls slide right on and off. For a variety of reasons we need to use a lot of paper towels in our home, so it is a great relief to finally have a holder we consider to be a keeper. This is my second purchase of this ratcheting towel holder. It's a gem. Works perfectly -- just enough resistance to allow you to tear off what you need, no more and no less. Sturdy, unless you drop it from counter height to a hard floor, which is why I'm buying another. The pole is now wobbly (worked beautifully 'til that moment of tragedy, though). So this first one will go into the laundry room and my new one will replace it in the kitchen. I don't usually care about such silly things as paper towel holders, but this one is so nice that I immediately dashed to my computer to order a replacement -- I guess that's a testimonial of how much I like it. You'll find yourself using more paper towels than usual... just because it's fun to make that clickity-clickity ratcheting noise... so be warned ;)Customer Review: worth owning

I like how with the One Handed Paper Towel Holder, no one has to argue if the paper towels have to go under or over (you know, since people do that with toilet paper, hehe).
This is a very convenient paper towel holder that works great when placed at the end of the kitchen counter. That way, when you walk into the living room with your dinner plate in your hand, you can simply use the other hand to pull a paper towel for yourself. A good buy.
Another good thing about the One Handed Paper Towel Holder is that, because it's designed to be placed on a table or kitchen counter, it's not attached to anything. So, when you pull a paper towel you don't have to worry about the whole thing popping off and crashing on the floor.

Ok... I've never really cared about a paper towel holder before and always settled for the "how cares" route for choosing one. Well I felt like caring this time and went shopping for something sturdy that actually "controls" the towels and how many you get when you pull on it, rather than it simply "holding up the roll".
This product does all that! When I yank on the towel, I hear the clicking mechanism that actually is controlling how much I get. And the whole unit is sturdy ... actually weighty... so I don't feel like it'll fall over. I love this product and I know realize the value of QUALITY vs. compulsive purchases.
