Customer Review: Best "Jumbo Shrimp" in value, size, appearance Summary: 4 Stars
This is a FurioŽ Home Product made in Thailand from Plantation Grown Trees (as opposed to cutting down a natural forest). It is just beautiful! I have mine in a small 7' X 8' study and the small depth and width is perfect. (You could get this desk through a small doorway like a 24 inch closet doorway.) The hutch is available at Target's brick and mortar stores and I'm glad I got it despite the wire situation which is a bit unwieldy due to there being no cutout in the back of the hutch. (Practical when it come to moving to have the desk and hutch separate rather than bolted together.) The desk is deep enough for my Gateway Astro (like an I-Mac with the monitor and CPU combined). The hardware is all standard (not odd stuff like in some scan design packages) and, although you still have to deal with locking cams, they do actually lock! You'll need a phillips head screwdriver and an allen wrench (included in hardware package), but is is also helpful to have a hammer and a small block of wood to help tap the parts together. The instructions are easy with both good pictures and words. The parts are drawn with pictures and given letters of the alphabet on a separate reference page and then those letters of the alphabet are used in the assembly diagrams. Although the desk is light weight and easy to asssemble, it is still helpful to have 2 people to put it together to get the cams, dowels, and holes all lined up on both sides. The dowels are conveniently already preinserted for you on one side of a wood part which will connect to another and the running metal tracts for the front drawer and keyboard tray are also already pre-attached to the wood parts. Buy it! (K-Mart has a very heavy large mission desk which I believe is fiberboard rather than solid wood and Office Depot and Office Max have nothing like it)
Customer Review: I liked my first one so much I bought a several more! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought my first one of these desks for my guest room (only 12 x 10). I needed a desk that would accomidate my 19" monitor but, had a pullout keyboard tray and matched my natural wood decor and floors, without taking over the room. I also live in the southwest so the style fit in with our existing decor plan without breaking our budget. It was pretty easy to put together (30 - 45 minutes) with very simple tools. My first one has served me well for about a year. The only problem is that I need to tighten the frame as the keyboard tray slips off occasionally. There is only minimal room for paperwork, books, etc. I find it excellent for my needs of surfing the net, paying bills, and propping my feet on while watching TV. I would rate it a 5 if there was no way to hide computer cables. A back panel that extends most the way to the floor would really have helped. I hung a towel the color of our walls behind the desk and that does on OK job of hiding cable running from the CPU to the monitor and they keyboard. Mousepad space is tight so I put mine on the keyboard tray and increased my mouse speed. Target has several other Mission style furniture items that match the desk for reasonable prices. I bought 2 smaller computer desks that have room only for a monitor for our second computer and my my computer at my office. They also have had 2 different styles of matching shelves. I bought (4) 3-tier shelf sets and (1) 4 tier shelf set. The best thing about these shelf units is that they come assembled. You simply fold out the shelves and thats it. These shelf units are amazingly sturdy. Finally I bought a desk organizer that fits onto the desk reasonably well.
Customer Review: Overall Good Desk Summary: 4 Stars
You will notice that the photo does not include any desktop tower (or even cables) in the picture-- it is small, but it is a good design. It bothers me a bit when companies make a picture like that but that's another issue.
This desk is terrific if you use it for the following:
1) iMac or Gateway Profile - type computer
2) Flatscreen monitor with a tower underneath the drawer (which for ventilation will require it being on a non-carpet floor or a plank of wood)
3) Flatscreen in front of a low-progile computer (Like my Gateway Essentials Desktop)
4) Laptop computer or a docking station for a laptop.
It's certainly not necessary, but using it this way will afford you enough space for a printer and even stuff like a handheld cradle, USB hub, etc. I can't emphasize sufficiently the need to use a LCD monitor-- CRTs over 14" will put you very close to the screen.
The drawer is big enough to hold 8.5x11" paper so it's ideal for printer supply storage or computer manuals. I would have liked the option of being able to make the desk left- or right- handed to allow for more flexibility in where I could locate the desk, but this is a small gripe.
If you do any writing or anything, you will need another desk for that. This is a good compliment to any mission-style furniture you might have, but it is not a replacement.
It's hard to find quality wood furniture at a good price anymore, and I am glad I found it here.
Customer Review: I love the Mission collection! Summary: 4 Stars
I recently bought the computer desk to replace one that had been broken in a move. I was so pleased with how it looked that I started buying other items in the Mission collection. I now own 9 different items. The desk is perfect as a computer desk. It's not particularly deep but is fine for a flat panel moniter. I'm very pleased with the rubberwood that it is made out off. Rubberwood is somewhat of a misnomer because it is in fact a hardwood.
I have the computer desk in my living room, and like I said I love it so much that I bought other pieces to match. In addition to the desk, I also have the hutch, file cabinet, magazine rack, 4 shelf bookcase, console table, desk organizer, coffee table, and two end tables.
As a testament to how much I love the Mission collection, I have to admit I bought the coffee table and end tables for future use. Our living room isn't big enought for them right now, but at some point we will move and have more space. And I wanted to own them so that I will have all matching pieces. Yes, I like the looks and construction of these pieces that much!
