Rare earth magnets are the strongest type of permanent magnet currently made. They are amazingly powerful for their size and have innumerable uses. These cube magnets are 0.5"(12.7mm) Long x 0.5"(12.7mm) Wide x 0.5"(12.7mm) Thick. They are magnetized through the thickness. They are composed of grade 40 neodymium iron boron magnetic material and are plated in nickel-copper-nickel for a shiny corrosion resistant finish. I bought these for holding a magnetic knife rack onto a fridge, but also ordered the 1/2" x 1/16" round types which work better because I need 3/8" to come flush with the housing.
We have not had any problem with chipping, no signs of fragility, but they are very strong. Our fifteen year old finds them extremely difficult to separate, the adults just find it hard work. With damp hands I can't remove them from the fridge, and even dry I have to rock them to break the hold.
They come in a double walled tube which is just sufficient to keep them from sticking to everything and messing with any ferrous metalwork they come close to.
Good to play with, but be careful round credit cards, CRT monitors, and anything else that is susceptible to magnetic fields.
