Customer Review: A very nice, energy saving personal heater Summary: 4 Stars
This is my first personal heater, so I can't compare it to others. Previously I've used space heaters, but I read that can use a lot of energy so I actually started paying attention to the wattage. At 300 watts, this heater was the lowest energy consumptive unit I found, and at a reasonable price.
Obviously, since it's not using that much energy, it's not going to put out as much heat as a fan powered space heater. This has no fan, it's just emitting heat from coils that are then reflected by the dish. I found this fits my needs perfectly, as I just wanted something that I can sit on or under my desk to keep me warm. The fact that it's silent is a HUGE benefit.
It seems extremely safe too, safer than the space heater I used to have. Unlike the space heater, this will turn off if knocked over, as there's a button on the button that will only allow the heater to run if it is fully compressed. I actually found that sitting on my carpet, the button doesn't compress very well, so I have to put it on something flat like a book. Except for the metal covering the face, the unit itself doesn't seem to heat up at all, which is good as it's plastic.
It would be nice if the unit could swivel more (as is it can tilt a little bit vertically), or if it had a timer setting, which the upgraded Optimus unit has, but for this price point (19.99 with free amazon prime shipping) I'm quite satisfied.
Overall: Very happy with the purchase, keeps me warm, and amazon had the the best price I could find with free shipping for amazon prime.
Customer Review: heats fast, seems safe, cat friendly Summary: 4 Stars
This was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a really small heater that consumed less than 500 watts, that provided just enough heat to take the chill out of an area while I'm playing video games. I can't recommended this little heater more.
This unit only consumes 300 watts. There's only one setting -- "on". When you turn the device on, it heats quickly, and generally you can feel the heat within a minute, although it may take several minutes for it to reach full intensity. This is a "dish" style heater, which means there is a heating element (much like you would find in a hair dryer), but no blower. The heat is directed back toward the dish, which then funnels the heated air in the direction it's pointed. In other words, think of this as a satellite dish that, instead of sending radio signals, it sends heat, but only to a specific location.
I place the heater about 4 feet from my seating location, and it feels "just right" for me. I personally don't like to feel "warm", but at that distance, it feels just right for me. If you want to feel warmer, you'd have to move it closer. The only downside is that this unit must be positioned 3 feet from any combustible items, so finding a safe location might be difficult. This also means keeping small children away from it. Fortunately, it has an auto-shut-off switch if the unit tips over -- there's a button on the bottom of the device that must remain pushed in on the floor in order for the device to work.
It's a great product -- that even my cat loves.
Customer Review: heater Summary: 4 Stars
With a 300 watt infra red parabolic dish heater being ones prefered method of small space heating, the optimus H-4110 9 inch is second to none. This little number casts noticable heat 7 feet away. I used it as a bedroom heater for several nights (12'x12' with a walk in closet) and it was successful at raising the room temperature 3-5 degrees in the corse of an hour. The base and tip over switch seem a little on the "mass produced" side of things, but overall this product does a very good job at what it was designed to do. My conscerns are that the dish doesnt do as efficient of a job at reflecting as I had hoped. There is a significant amount of heat that convects off the top of the unit. If a hand is held 6 inches straight above the dish, it will burn your skin. my guess is that these dish heaters reflect somthing like 80% of there heat in the direction intended. Not a big problem, just dont put it under things like cabnetry or other tight overhead spaces. I'm not saying it will start things on fire, but if it will burn human skin at a height of 6 inches, it cant be good for other things to get that hot either.
Customer Review: Handy product, but don't expect desert-like heat Summary: 4 Stars
This is a pretty good heater for specialized uses. I'm using it in a small bathroom and it works great - kicks off more than enough heat, compact in size, and easy to use. Most importantly, it's economical to run. Since it only draws 300 watts, it uses a fraction of the electricity of a larger (1,500 watt) heater.
I can also see this as being a very effective personal heater for an office - it makes zero noise (no fan), so it won't disturb the person in the next cubical.
But, its economical nature means that this is not a good choice if you're looking to heat anything other than a very small room or use it for spot heating.
It comes with a three year warranty but there's a catch - you need to mail it back with a check for either $15 or $20 (depending on how long you've had it) to get a replacement. Once you figure in the cost of return postage, it costs more to repair it than buy a new one. Build quality is what you would expect at this price point - nothing great, but decent.
Good choice for specialized uses, and very economical in terms of energy usage.
