Tools and Hardware Reviews of P3 International P4460 Kill A Watt EZ Electricity Usage MonitorCustomer Review: Does what it says Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the P3 International P4460 Kill A Watt EZ Electricity Usage Monitor as a gift for my husband, and he has been using it all over the house. It is very easy to use and program, and with the addition of a short extension cord, the meter can be left anywhere handy to read, even if plugged in behind a refrigerator. If I had to fault the meter on any one thing, it would be that the dial has no light, and the lettering is small (numbers are fine). It took a flashlight to read the dial in many cases. The directions should also explain all the various electrical measurements. They list them all, but give no explanation of what they mean. They also don't mention overload protection, just maximum wattage for the meter. I got the feeling several times the temporary starting load of an appliance might cause the meter to fail. I would highly recommend this product to anyone, the results it gives are in some cases very surprising and revealing.
Customer Review: Find out how much you are spending on electricity. Summary: 5 Stars
When I bought this I had recently moved into my first house. I never had to pay for electricity so I didn't know how much I would be spending, but I knew that I didn't want to pay a lot. This tool allowed me to identify devices that were not energy efficient so that I can replace them if I wanted to. The only thing you need to do is program in your electric rate. After that, you will get a good amount of data about any device you plug in to the Kill A Watt. Useful data includes exactly how much energy a specific device uses and how much it will cost to run for a day/month/year. It has held up pretty well over the years except for the plastic cover in front of the LCD. That has since come off (after two years). It looks like it was just glued into place so I guess that was to be expected eventually. I would recommend this if you are looking to save money on electricity and want to find those power draining devices.
Customer Review: Kill A Watt Power Usage Monitor Tells All! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm using the 4460 to learn how much power each of my household appliances is using. I'm hoping the results will tell me whether or not I need to replace any appliances or devices. So far the results are great. All I had to do was enter our KWH rate from ComEd and plug the device in. It tracks how long it has been monitoring an appliance and measures the power usage. After a number of days of monitoring - the longer the better - it projects the cost per day, per week, per month, and per year.
The only problem I had is that when it was connected to a microwave oven the 4460 would beep for a while whenever the oven began to operate. The operating manual doesn't describe this condition, but I think it may be related to a low voltage condition, based on the voltage display at the time. I need to place a call to the company to see if they have an answer.
Customer Review: helpful-neat tool Summary: 5 Stars
I live in an all electric home and thou I know my major consumer of power in my home is the hot water heater this tool helped me identify what "vampire" items were most worthy of regularly disconnecting. The entertainment centers in each bed room TV,DVD,cable box, surround sound only consume about a $1.00 worth of electricity a month, my PC with scanner, printer, desk light 22in LCD and speakers cost me about $2.00 a month when left on 24-7 so putting it to sleep is a cost savings of about 65%.
The frige is about $3.55 a mo. Haven't checked out the cordless phones yet or microwave... but overall the Kill-a-watt is helpful to educate yourself of what uses power even when you don't use them and how much they cost you an hour, week, month or year...
Its also good way to show the kids how to be aware of wastefulness that you might not even realize...
Customer Review: Informative device Summary: 5 Stars
These days, everyone has electronics that stay plugged in all day. From routers to DVRs to All-In-Ones, I wanted to find out just how much money these devices are costing per month. Now I know! I love how you can plug something in and it immediately starts giving averages (yearly, monthly, etc.) so you can quickly find out how much it costs to run these devices. The longer you have something plugged in, the better the average should be, especially on devices that you frequently turn on and off, like TVs and Game Consoles. But to find out how much power a device is using when turned off (energy vampires) you can quickly get an average since that usage shouldn't fluctuate too much.
Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the device. I like being able to input my utility kilowatt-hour charge so I don't have to calculate the costs and averages myself.
