Tools and Hardware Reviews of P3 International P4460 Kill A Watt EZ Electricity Usage MonitorCustomer Review: Obsessed with the Kill a Watt EZ Summary: 5 Stars
My wife thinks I'm obsessed with the Kill A Watt EZ! I had more fun with this thing than you could imagine. It did just what I was looking for and not a lot of bells and whistles to deal with. I think I've plugged in every 110 appliance in the house (and the barn)! I got a lot of surprises on the efficiency of different stuff. It is quick and easy to set up with your utility rate and reset when you are ready to switch appliances. Extremely accurate too. Too bad it will not do 220 appliances (stove, hot h2o heater, drier) !!!!!!!!! Unit takes up both receptacles when plugged in, so I chose to use a lead cord most of the time. This made for easier hand held reading anyway. I put a lot of things on switches and power strips and I now know which freezer to empty first. (huge difference in freezers!) This thing will pay for itself fast. Matt
Customer Review: Great power monitor in small package Summary: 5 Stars
Ideal instrument for determining power consumption of household equipment.
Has all the scales you would normally need for testing incoming power - Watts, Amps, Volts, Power factor, Etc.
Making some test leads will make it even more versatile when trying to determine power consumption of some equipment which may be hard wired or does not come with a standard plug. A short extension cord also makes reading the display much easier when testing devices that do have a standard plug.
I'm an electrical contractor so I suggest you do not attempt making additional test leads unless you understand how to correctly attach them to a ac circuit.
Comes with a 3 prong plug connection on the back of the monitor but will test any device with only 2 prongs (like a table lamp).
Customer Review: Slick Unit, Easy to Use Summary: 5 Stars
The P3 Kilo-A-Watt unit is very easy to use and helped me understand the energy usage in my house.
I had a De-humidifier that was using up to $48/Month!
My spare freezer in the garage is using $7/Month.
My electric motorcycle uses less than $.01/mile (see www.schultzengineering.us/ebike.htm).
Some people said it was hard to see the display, but I had no problems reading it because I plugged the P4460 into a power strip, an extension cord into the P4460, and the appliance being monitored into the extension cord.
Also, the unit retains the cost per Kilowatt hour when unplugged so it doesn't need to be reprogrammed between each use as another reviewer indicated.
Customer Review: Should have bought it sooner! Summary: 5 Stars
I kept putting off buying something to measure electrical usage in devices and then finally broke down and purchased the P3. With the cost of electricity going thru the roof, this tool will help me identify where my money is going. I should have bought it sooner. It provides a very accurate readout on what it costs to run a device per hour ... day ... week ... month .... year. Don't believe the charts and info provided by companies stating "cost pennies a day" to run. Most times it's BALONEY. See for yourself with this device. Biggest surprise so far has been the cost in operating very similiar devices produced by different manufacturers which vary by as much as 50%. Knowing this helps me make intelligent decisions. Best of Luck
Customer Review: Found out my refrigerator isn't as much of an energy hot as I thought. Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this and plugged the refrigerator into it. (Actually, we got a high-capacity extension cord to plug into the wall, plugged the kill-a-watt into the extension cord, then plugged the refrigerator into the kill-a-watt so we could reach it easily.)
We entered in our price per kwH, $.103 or just about 10 cents, left it plugged in for a couple of days and found out the refrigerator only costs $8/month to operate. Not terrific, but not horrible enough to make replacing it a priority.
I WAS planning on buy a new refrigerator, but now I think I'll wait.
Public Libraries should rent these out. I may donate mine to the local library after I'm finished checking other appliances.
