Tools and Hardware Reviews of PSI Woodworking D50A 4-Inch by 50 Flexible Dust Collection HoseCustomer Review: Best small shop dust hose Summary: 5 Stars
As a new woodworker, I recently installed a dust collector system. PVC pipe runs under the workbench to a tee with two slide gates. One leg goes to the table saw using the hard flexible pipe and pvc connections. The other leg goes to a cyclone lid on a metal can. PSI Flexible hose from the metal can is connected to the jointer or the planer. So I have used every type of piping except metal. Here are some observations:
The 50ft of flexible piping is the most useful of all. It is plenty strong and is tear resistant. It is quite suitable for horizontal runs and for moving between machines. There is no problem with it tearing accidentally. It is not suitable for elevated horizontal runs (too flexible) and will be crushed if one steps on it. So avoid putting it in walkways.
A great use is for expansion joints and short connections. PVC pipe will not connect to the hard flexible pipe. No possible way. But a 9" piece of PSI flex duct can be made to connect to pvc pipe, pvc elbows, hard flex pipe connectors, etc.
Also 50 ft is way too much. I only used about 20 ft total. Handling 50 ft is likely trying to handle a 50 ft slinky.
The 10 ft long hard flexible duct is basically worthless stuff. Why would any use it instead of 4" S&D pvc is beyond me. I connected a piece to the table saw only because I had it. And I bought it because "all woodworkers use this stuff, right?". Bah, save your money. Buy PSI flex duct and PVC pipe.
Customer Review: What a deal! Summary: 5 Stars
I probably had the best deal of all...free shipping, discounts, and a $30 credit placed on my first purchase from Amazon...the hose cost me a $1.42! LOL. Anyway, I would have been willing to pay $45. The hose holds up very well to my 3 HP motor with my 4 bag (2 on top and 2 on bottom) dust collector (2,800 CFM). The 6" connection splits into two 4" connections. The hose will not collapse sideways. It will collapse lengthwise, but that doesn't even matter as long as you attach the ends well. Also, I used small, small bungee cords to attach the hose along my ceiling and walls. It's perfect size to stretch over a 4" pvc pipe which is really 4.5" wide OR the hose can fit inside a 4" pvc pipe female connector. It's so flexible and I can handle it without worrying about tearing it or draggin it around my shop.
JUST don't step on it or use it with rough stuff like metal shavings, large pieces of wood because OVER A LENGTHY period of time, it will probably fail.
Customer Review: Really tough and low price Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this hose for years in a busy workshop. I planned on installing rigid pipe and blast gates but haven't gotten around to putting it all up. So, in the mean time I just drag this hose around the shop from tool to tool. So far I have no complaints, I've abused it pretty good, dragging and yanking the whole 50' around corners, over benches, etc. So far no damage, it's as good as new. I will cut it to length some day and drop a piece to each tool and one over my bench top for my portable tools. I do have the Grizzly 2 hp, 1550 CFM collector, so maybe that overcomes plugging problems with shear power, because so far I've never had a plug either even when I'm planing a lot of lumber which produces a lot of large shavings. I run the hose into a 30 gal. cyclonic separator just before the collector too. I can use the internal wire as my ground, just a bonus.
So for the price it's a deal.
Customer Review: Excellent for the intended purpose. Summary: 5 Stars
I have used this hose exclusively to run dust collection in my home shop and prefer it to any others I have seen. It's lightness and flexibility make it easy to handle and it is easy to add blast gates, "Y's" & "T's" as neccessary. That being said, were I equipping a professional shop, I would probably err on the side of longevity and go with the heavy plastic or even metal to resist injury and what might end up hurtling through the collection system. I would make the same decision again and am reordering more of this hose at this time. If durability were the only factor, we would all wear army boots and the sales of sandals and sneakers would be nil. Comfort and ease of use are the guidelines here. Highly Recommend!
Customer Review: Good value Summary: 5 Stars
Like so many other reviewers have said, this is a good value. The hose does have a tendency to collapse on its self, but this is not a problem when hooked up to a machine. I also took the advice of one of the other reviewers to let it air out before hooking it up. I have 5" metal ducting and it turns out that a 4" S&D (sewer and drain) pipe fits just inside the metal blast gate and this hose will stretch enough to go over this same piece of PVC. The less flexible clear hose won't do this, so this turned out to be an extra bonus for buying this hose. I've got enough hose to pretty much hook up my whole shop and use the 4" clear hose for moving between portable tools and hand vacuuming. Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase.
