Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR QTSS Whirlpool Quarter Turn Refrigerator Water Filter

Customer Review: So far, so good. Price works too!
Summary: 5 Stars

Needed replacement filters for Whirlpool sideXside, my first refrigerator with ice/water dispenser. Did not want to break the bank with original filters. While searching internet prices and reviews on and off for several days, came across the PUR filters on Amazon. After reading reviews and price comparing with other refrigeration/plumbing sites found through google searches, I pulled the trigger through Amazon. Other sites had some cheaper, unknown replacements that appeared to work for my model fridge, but I didn't trust the specs they listed (for coupling with my model fridge) or their reliability. Can't get too stoked about water filters, so I'll just say that these PUR filters through Amazon have been fine. Am not a water snob, and the water tastes as good or better than Brita, which allowed us to get rid of two pitchers (freeing up fridge room). Installation needed some elbow grease, but that was likely a function of the fridge coupler. Price was competitive enough for me to buy again as needed (I spent WAY too much time price shopping on net). Installed a couple months ago, we dispense half a gallon a day on average, and filter indicator on fridge says 93% still. Good purchase.

Customer Review: Works as good as the originals!
Summary: 5 Stars

We've been very happy with the filtered water from our refrigerator, but the filters are so expensive. I searched everywhere and this was the cheapest one I found. It works as good as other brands including the Sears store's brand. We can tell that it works, our water has a "taste" from the tap that it does not have from the frig. The other reason we like the filtered water is that we live on the Ohio River where there are lots of farm chemicals that wash into it upstream, so I always feel better knowing we filter that stuff out. The water company says they filter it, but hey, one extra filtering won't hurt from where I sit.
Then there's the issue of lead and other stuff that might be in the water lines: our house was built in 1967, no telling what kinds of stuff are in the pipes, it never hurts to give the water a final filtering before you chuck down a glassful.
Using our frig filter saves a bundle over what bottled water would cost too.
Tip on getting old filters out of the frig if it's hard to turn (mine's so tight that it's impossible to turn by hand): Use Channel-lock pliers to turn the filter-holder handle counterclockwise, it gives you tremendously more leverage!

Customer Review: Great Water/ Less Money
Summary: 5 Stars

I just purchased this for my Whirlpool Side-by-Side. We live in NY which recently implemented deposits for water bottles. We decided that it would be more economical to use the filter that came with the refrigerator than to keep purchasing water bottles. After reading many reviews I decided to go with the PUR filter. I installed the filter and allowed @ 2 gallons of water to run through it. I also disposed of all the ice from the old filter. The water tastes just as good as the bottled water we were purchasing and my wife called me and told me that the ice cubes are now clear (not cloudy). I recommend this filter to anyone interested in great tasting water and saving money.

Customer Review: Replacement for Whirlpool #4396510
Summary: 5 Stars

Is a less expensive replacement for whirlpool filter #4396510 and appears to filter the same contaminants.

Original Whirlpool filter label claims: NSF/ANSI Certified against standard 42 for Chlorine taste & odor; particulate reduction class 1; certified against ANSI standard 53 for Lead, Mercury, Benzene, p-Dichlor., Toxaphene 2, Asbestos, Cysts, Turbidity, & Altrazine.

PUR replacement filter label claims: tested and certified against standard #42 and #53. Carton specifically mentions Chlorine taste/odor, Lead, Sediment, p-Dichlor., Benzene.

Customer Review: A good filter at a fair price
Summary: 5 Stars

Not a water snob, but I've been using PUR filters on my Whirlpool side by side for a couple of years, and they work at least as well as the OEM brands that can be purchased at Lowes and Home Depot. The water produced by the filter is clean and clear, odorless, and without any taste at all. It installs easily and it also makes good coffee. There have been zero problems with this filter, or its flow rate. A similar filter from Lowes is $44.88, and I don't think it is any better than the PUR. I plan to keep buying these on Amazon for as long as I own the refrigerator.
