All cement-fiber siding contains silica, which is harmless unless large quantities are inhaled as dust. Because the SS404 doesn't produce airborne dust like circular saws do, you'll completely avoid the serious health risks associated with silica.
Long-Lasting, Double-Ended Blades
The SS404 features reversible blades machined from solid steel that provide 20,000 feet of cutting. Because these blades are reversible, they'll last through 20 houses' worth of siding jobs--twice as long as single-ended blades and 45 times as long as circular-saw blades.

I purchased the Pactool International SS404 because we are in the middle of a huge remodel and we chose fiber cement lap siding to reclad our home. We knew going into it that there were issues about cutting the cement siding such as the amount of dust and noise that is overwhelming if you cut the siding with a circular saw. A neighbor suggested that we use special shears designed for cement siding instead, so after tons of research we chose the pactool for several reasons. The price was right compared to other shears, the company specializes in fiber cement cutting tools, and the reviews were excellent. Not knowing what to expect, as this was our first attempt at using fiber cement siding, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. No dust, no loud noise, no complaints from the neighbors, no slow down in the process of cutting....no problems at all! This tool will cut through 1/4 inch siding like paper, even faster than I can cut it with a circular saw using a special cement cutting blade. I do recommend that you cut the fiber board with the back side facing up. It will leave a cleaner edge on the front side. Another small inconvenience is the 1/8 inch cut out that is removed by the shears. It will curl back over the cutting head and block the view of your cutting line. Since the shears are varible speed, the harder you press the trigger, the faster they go, its quite easy to slow down and direct these curly tails away from your line of vision. In all, these shears have been an excellent purchase and have allowed the siding of our home to proceed much faster, cleaner, and quieter than we ever anticipated. One other thing, this model is designed for the 1/4 inch siding material only. It will not cut the thicker cement board used for trim. Pactool offers another shear for that purpose. Oh, I forgot to add, these shears saved us $2800 bucks. That was the estimate we recieved from a contractor for labor to install the siding. Makes it worth it to be a DIYer.
