These Peltor Earmuffs are lightweight and comfortable considering the level of protection they give.
If you're not familiar with Peltor, it is a big and respected name in safety products for head, face and hearing. They call this type of protector "earmuffs." Their earmuffs have graduated levels of protection starting at 20 dB and going all the way to 106 dBA (decibels adjusted).
My first impression holding these earmuffs was that they were too small and lightweight to be sufficiently protective. However, I was wrong about that. This beats using the larger and heavier brands, and something larger in a Peltor would risk overprotecting. Overprotecting can occur when you can't hear signals and sounds that you need to hear, and overprotecting can lead to not using earmuffs when you should.
If you use this hearing protector a lot, you can get replacement inside foam pads. Peltor calls these replacements "hygiene kits."
Peltor also makes earplugs. I used to use them in the artillery (Army), and like earmuffs they can be fatiguing to wear. Not only that, but I don't like jamming typical earplugs into the ear canal because it's sometimes necessary to really jam them in there to make them stay. The big thing Peltor did that helped make them famous in the earplug arena is develop their "skull screws."
Peltor's Skull Screws are really famous. I use them also and like them more than other earplugs. They are shaped like conical screw grips so you can twist them into your ear canal until they seal (and thus stay). Many of us (like me) have different size ear canals, so we'd have to literally buy two sets of different sizes just to get a set that fits both ears, and this screw grip solves that.
Peltor's screwgrip plugs are rated for 30 dB (25 on Amazon, however). But here's the kicker on the screw grip earplugs - on Amazon they are more expensive! By a lot!
