These earplugs are absolutely great! When the dark sides (used for constant noise like motors or machinery) are in, it almost achieves dead silence. Even with a 44 magnum, barley anything is heard. The yellow sides are good too but, personally anyways, I wouldn't recommend using them for anything bigger than a 223 round. They do a great job muffling 223's and down while still being able to talk to someone at a comfortable level (due to the little tunnel system built into the plugs). Anything bigger, simply switch to the dark side and you could rattle off 300Win-Mags without ever once having a problem with sound.
I got these plugs because I have electronic earphones and although they are great, they are slightly to big (hit the stock of gun) when I shoot skeet. These earplugs are very low profile and work great for a problem like this. In fact, I feel like the dark side of these plugs dampen sound better than my electronic ones! One thing to note for anyone buying these, read the directions on how to put them in. At first I just put them in like any other plugs and thought they were good; then I read the directions just out of curiosity - come to figure out it makes a HUGE difference in the plugs' performance. Overall GREAT set of plugs and I'd recommend them for anybody. No matter if you shooting .44's with a snub nose, or plinking cans with an old .22, these earplugs will get the job done.
