Customer Review: Great for Airplanes & Sporting Events

I bought these as a low-cost alternative to pricey noise-canceling phones (that also would require batteries). I have used them on an airplane, and they performed admirably. On both plane trips there were screaming children that greatly irritated my traveling companions, but which seemed to be just distant noises with these headphones. They were also able to easily tame the noise from the raucous airport terminal. As long as you don't mind looking like a weirdo with these monstrous headphones in public (luckily my wife will allow herself to be seen with me while wearing them), they make a great alternative to noise-canceling phones. I used these with my gen. 1 Ipod, without any kind of amplification from the headphones themselves, and the volume/power level was fine, and I did not even need to max out the volume (hovered around 75% volume). Other than the absurd looks of the headphones, be aware that in order to isolate properly, they do apply a bit of pressure on your head while wearing them, however, with the soft cushioning, I found them very comfortable, and I could wear them for hours on end. One further thing to note is that because they create such a great seal, and are so insulating, they will warm your ears up just like earmuffs during the winter. If you are in a very hot environment, some people might become bothered by the insulating properties of the phones. My only real complaint is that these phones don't offer the finest sound quality, but as I tend to listen to podcasts and audio books with them, I don't need to them to have stellar reproduction. Overall they are a great value (I paid $64.40), and I feel great not having to jack up the volume and possibly damage my hearing while trying to listen to audio in loud environments.
