Tools and Hardware Reviews of Porta-Nail 42620 Flooring Nail/Staple Setting Tool

Customer Review: Nail Punch
Summary: 5 Stars

I did a big hardwood job and this punch came in handy. It set's nail heads very well.I would buy it again

Customer Review: Good when used for its intended purpose
Summary: 4 Stars

I am quite sure this tool was made strictly to set nails which are just barely above the surface of the wood when the porta-nailer did not drive them in completely. I've seen some other reviewers saying some negative things about this nail set but personally I have not had the issues they are describing, relating to its usage. It has worked out quite well when I used it to set some slightly raised T shaped cleats into the tongue and groove flooring. I have not had any problems with it. I do however feel the need to drop 1 star because that MSRP certainly is above what I think a nail set should cost, even if it has a more unusual shape. I think eight dollars would be more appropriate. Would I buy one again? Yes- because it is useful to me, but at over thirteen dollars plus shipping, that price tag certainly makes me frown a bit.

Customer Review: Not quite a "must have" for flooring installation
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this after having little success with other types of punches to set the occasional nail that wouldn't go all the way in (mostly due to operator error). Overall, it was very helpful for nails that only needed to be set 1/4" or less. I guess a regular screwdriver would do the trick as well, and for a lot cheaper. I would say if you are installing a lot of flooring, get one. For the weekend warrior only doing a room or so, use something you already have. The price just doesn't warrant buying it for small jobs.

For nails that are only partially in the flooring, I would recommend pulling/breaking off with pliers and setting the remainder, followed by driving another nail next to the first.

Customer Review: Very nice tool, but expensive
Summary: 4 Stars

This tool is beautifully made and works well. You certainly get what you pay for, but ~$15 for a nail set is a high price.

Still, if you inadvertently leave a nail slightly raised while face nailing with the Porta-Nailer in face-nailing mode, this tool really saves the day.

If you only use your Porta-Nailer to blind nail, then I'd probably use a standard nail punch, as any slips/damage to the tongue of the plank while setting a raised nail will be hidden by the next plank.

Customer Review: The right tool for the job
Summary: 4 Stars

Four stars for high price.
These must be available to professional flooring mechanics but I've never seen one before. Expensive for a nail set but works better than the screwdriver I was using. The rectangle shaped point fits any brand "T" or "L" style wood flooring cleats and 1/4in. staples (maybe 5/16 also). It doesn't slip off the nail head as easily as a standard nail set.
