Tools and Hardware Reviews of Safety Siren Pro Series HS71512 3 Radon Gas DetectorCustomer Review: Worth the money if you have radon. Summary: 5 Stars
We have a radon mitigation system in our house. The radon fan died (just out of warranty) and I bought a new fan to replace it. Then we were faced with multiple uses of canister type radon measurements to determine if the system was working again. We decided it was worth trying the Safety Siren Pro radon gas detector since the price was reasonable. The radon and home inspector professionals use instruments that cost $1000's. We plugged it in (6/24/10) and let it run a few days before installing the new fan. Then we watched as the short-term radon reading dropped from about 18 to about 1 pC/L over a period of 7 days and line out in the 1 to 1.5 range. The long-term average reading comes down more slowly.
I think it is appropriate for someone who already has a radon mitigation system. If you just need to know if you have radon, get one of the canister exposure kits.
Customer Review: WORKS! Verified by radon gas test by home inspector. Summary: 5 Stars
Product does what it says. Purchased following a home inspection result of high radon levels in the basement (14 pCi/l). We purchased this with next day delivery to verify prior to remediation. The meter gave us approximately the same reading (13.6 pCi/l). We went ahead with the remediation and installed a fan system. We were able to reset the meter very simply with the instructions and get a new reading within the 2 days that verified we were still above the limit before we even received the test results from the company. I am very impressed. At first, I purchased this only for my entertainment as I am studying radiation health physics, however, I found it to be a very useful tool and we have used it at mulitple locations. I recommend this to anyone that has a basement. Well worth the cost as you can reset and reuse again and again!
Customer Review: Great Product! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great product. We have had it about 2 months, and it has performed well. Before we bought the detector, we paid $10 for a radon test kit at Home Depot, then $30 to get the report. We found we had a huge problem, and wanted to make sure it was taken care of.
We bought the detector, and were able to watch the average drop as the radon removal system worked. We are now at the background level, which is great. I can think of a couple of improvements, such as an instantaneous readout (i.e. what the "current" reading is), but it is great to have. With this model, it takes 48 hours to get an initial reading, then displays either a 7 day average, or a long term average (i.e. since it was either plugged in or reset). Since it is portable, we were able to check all the levels of our house. Definitely recommended.
Customer Review: A very good long-term solution to monitoring for radon Summary: 5 Stars
Rather than pay for another 20 dollar one-time two-day radon test after my radon mitigation system was installed, I decided to get this detector instead. It was certainly worth the investment in continuous peace of mind. Just note that you'll need to do some minor installation since the detector needs to hang from a stud in your wall. You just can't plug it into an electrical outlet. I'd recommend it for anyone who has a basement or lives in an area with high concentrations of radon, even if you've had an earlier test done, since radon levels can change over time, particularly in newer houses as they "settle" and perhaps develop cracks where radon can get in. We tested in 1998 with a one-time test and got a reading of 3.7. We tested again just recently and got a reading of 7.8, which is what caused us to install the mitigation system.
Customer Review: Faster radon results Summary: 5 Stars
I used charcoal tests (7-day and 3-month) to confirm the presence of radon in our home, and the Safety Siren to verify that the mitigation system I installed in my house was effective. In the event I still had elevated levels of radon, this device would allow me to sample several locations quickly to find the source of radon entry, a task that would be difficult and/or time consuming with charcoal tests. Several samples around our home confirmed that the radon mitigation was effective and uniform. Now I loan the detector to my friends so they can quickly determine the radon concentration in their homes.
The instructions are easy to understand, and the simple menu on the device is easy to navigate. The Safety Siren provides an easy, affordable way to measure radon in real time.
