Among all other honing gigs on the market, seems the fact that "you get what you pay for" states over all. In the world of woodworking, it's very precious to craft the very best of a piece of scrap wood into a beautiful master piece. However no matter how good experienced or novice you are at this practice, whether you work with very fine hand tools or use a decent one from the near home store, you must always have a very sharp tool to do so.
So when you find multiple brands, materials and shapes, if you are for the go with a higly priced honing guides... then a Veritas is your guy. Otherwise I'd suggest to try this honing guide (great value for it's price).
It's simplicity and lightness allows you to easily set your dull chisel or plane in a very smooth operation. The versality comes when you are up to hone chisels on any dimension, because on the other honing guides around, this one lets you set firmily the tool with its top bar that secures the chisel using two tumb screws and position it on the perfect angle, whereas other gigs are sloppy or inaccurate.
Even some of them, are a trouble to secure them onto the guide. Plus, this honing guide also can be used on your grinding machine guide. It only takes you to unattach the rolling base and set onto it for the proper grinding. .
So.. for a couple of extra bucks you probably want to avoid the hassle of other guides that are difficult to set (nor the less they are splendid to hone planes). Specially when they're also not as wide as this from its rolling base, which seems to have better stability when running on sanding paper, water or diamond stones.
