Description of Chrome Countertop Water Filter
The Countertop Chrome Superior is stylish and a great water filter value, designed for chlorine treated water supplies - provides excellent filtration of up to 2500 gallons at an affordable price. Outstanding performance is achieved by using a replaceable 1.0 micron Solid Carbon Block filter cartridge. This cartridge removes particulates as small as 1.0 micron and filters chlorine taste and odor, sediment, rust, and particulate matter for sweet, clear, great-tasting water. Our Solid Carbon Block filters flow in the radial (outside-to-inside) direction, providing increased dirt capacity and low pressure drop. Unlike granular activated carbon (GAC) water filters, solid carbon block cartridges will not channel or bypass, due to the extreme uniformity of their extruded activated carbon core. I received this water filter last week, and it kicks ass! Compared to my baby Brita filter I was using previously, it has several advantages:
1) It is much cheaper per gallon to filter water this way, since this filter is good for 2500 gallons, whereas the Brita filters were only good for 100 gallons. Replacement filters for this unit cost $30, and the Brita filters cost $13.
Brita filter: $13/100gal or 13 cents per gallon filtered.
Purenex filter: $30/2500gal or 1.2 cents/gal filtered.
2) The flow rate is much higher than that of the Brita filter. I can fill up a 2.5 gallon container in 75 seconds with this new filter, and it took over five minutes to do it with my Brita filter. Time to fill a 1-liter water bottle: seven seconds.
3) This filter has an adjustable nozzle, and so the connection with the faucet never has to be disturbed and it does not leak. My Brita faucet mount would often come loose when I moved the switch, and after a while it would leak no matter what I did. Won't be a problem with this unit.
I bought this filter through Super Saver shipping so I could save as much as possible. I ordered it on a Sunday and received it only three days later. I think that's a record for Super Saver shipping speed. It's also a nice-looking unit, although I'm not too concerned about that as long as it works well.
There are a couple of minor downsides to this filter unit: the first ten or so gallons I filtered had a faint sulfurous taste. But it seems to be gone now, and the water doesn't have any apparent taste or odor. In fact, you could say the filter almost does too good of a job, since the filtered water tastes almost distilled. I don't mind, although for people who do mind the lack of taste there are mineral mixtures that you can mix into your filtered water for better taste.
Also, the price went up thirty bucks since I ordered it less than two weeks ago, but I found another similar one on this site that is much the same but clear rather than chrome, and it's only forty bucks. It's my understanding that they both use the same generically available replacement filter for thirty dollars. Try that one and save a few bucks.
