Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rayovac SE3DLN Sportsman Xtreme 300-Lumen LED Lantern

Customer Review: Great Product!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I live on the gulf coast where we have to deal with hurricanes frequently,..and electric power is subject to be lost during a storm at anytime.I decided to try this product and see if it was for me. I read some of the, not so favorable comments concerning the blinking green light draining the batteries. I decided to run my own test to see if they were accurate in their evaluations. I bought some good size "D" batteries and marked the date I installed them on the batteries before I installed them in my lantern. I bought the lantern from Amazon.com in September,2010 and the lantern still has plenty of power and bright battery life,...going on toward March of 2011.

I don't expect to have any battery problems inside of a year's time,...at least. I pick it up and hit the switch to check the light, distribution, every so often,...and for a small lantern,...man it really throws out the light!!!! I'm going to buy 2-3 more, one for my truck and and give some to my sisters as presents! Well worth the price too! Replacing the cap on the battery compartment requires strict attention,..but is not to difficult,..considering the output and quality of the product and the light it produces!

Customer Review: Very impressed
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this lantern for our camping trip and was thoroughly impressed. I couldn't believe the amount of lumens this lantern produces. I was initially concerned with the battery life of the lantern but then was happily surprised that the lantern was still pumping out the light after our 3rd 2-day camping trip. We had to of been using the lantern at least 5 hours a day too. I am very happy and will be ordering additional units for my employees to use in attics and crawlspaces at work. The lantern is very well built (something i'm very picky about) and very durable. I've dropped multiple times already. It's very compact w/ a built-in handle and hanging hook on the bottom. The lensed shield is removable which in turn produces a lightbulb illumination effect which works very nice for hanging in a tent or above a cooking stove. Be warned when using w/ close by neighboring campers, this lantern is very, very bright. Overall, Be comforted in purchasing this well built lantern without hesitation. You will be happy you did and will not regret it. I know I enjoy it and I'm done with the propane/kerosene lanterns for good! Hooray for not having to replace those stupid mantles anymore!

Customer Review: The best LED Lantern To Date!
Summary: 5 Stars

After doing side-by-side comparisons with the Brunton Polaris, Black Diamond Apollo, and the Coleman Exponent Packaway I decided that this lantern offered the best combination of compact size, brightness (it is THE brightest of the lot) and high-value pricing. While the BD Apollo is smaller and lighter in weight, it is far dimmer in light output. The Rayovac is also the most flexible with a nice bale handle for hanging in a traditional way or setting on a camp table, and a nice clip-hook embedded in the bottom to hang it upside down with the globe removed, as others have noted, for a great high-hanging tent light. D-cell batteries make for higher than average weight in this group but a better option than the Brunton's C-cells which are harder to obtain and used by almost nothing else in your camp. Battery life is very good as you'd expect from D-cell power. Great for car camping where weight is not such as issue. For backpacking, I'd probably go with the Black Diamond and put-up with the lower light output. I just ordered another Rayovac and am giving away my Coleman propane lantern.

Customer Review: Compact, lightweight and very bright
Summary: 5 Stars

This very compact lantern has an extremely bright, white (not purplish) light that is well diffused. It seems well made, with hard rubber bumpers that protect the top, bottom and sides.

The top diffuser comes off with a twist so the lantern can be hung upside- down on its hook, recessed in the base, to serve as a ceiling fixture.

The lantern has a high intensity, low intensity and strobe setting.

The only feature I found poorly thought out is the little flashing green LED above the power button. I suppose it's there either to reassure you the batteries are still good or to make it easy to find in the dark, but since it's recessed, you can see it only when looking straight at the LED. Some reviewers seemed concerned the flashing green LED will draw meaningful power and so drain the batteries, but I'm sure that it will have no measurable effect on battery life- it's tiny and dim and flashes for a very brief time, once every 5 seconds.

This is a very good lantern at a great price, and its small size makes it ideal for most camping situations.

Customer Review: My 2 cents' worth ...
Summary: 5 Stars

I read most of your reviews before buying this and thank you! I did buy the lantern, just put it together and have these follow-up comments. 1. It's made in (... drum roll) you guessed it! Red China, for those who are interested, as I am but it's getting hard to find anything that isn't. 2. The base: I don't know if mine is different but the way mine is made it is a snap to put the batts in and replace the base. 3. The handle on top is very sturdy. 4. The lantern as a whole is extremely sturdy and seems like it will last. 5. The light it puts out on high is enormous. 6. The light on "low" is still pretty bright. 7. The flashing LED light looks like it might drain the batt after about a thousand years, if the batts didn't corrode first; which they probably would. 8. The hook on the bottom is not as sturdy as the one on top, but I think it's good enough to hang the lantern without any danger. Overall: this is worth every penny of the $25 it costs. I'm thinking about a second and possibly a third. I suggest you get this. It is small but the light is incredible.
