Description of Chinese Bearer of Good Fortune and Longevity ceramic figure, hand glazed

This is a hand cast ceramic statuette from the Shiwan Artistic Ceramic Factory where ceramics have been hand crafted since the early Qing Dynasty (1644 to 1912). Today the factory still makes its figurines in much the same way as in centuries past. Many of the colorful glazes and techniques used in Chinese ceramic production originated in Shiwan during the Tang dynasty (618 to 907AD). As is typical with figurines from the Shiwan Artistic Ceramic Factory, no glaze is applied to the face or other exposed "skin," which is why they are often called Mud Men.

Produced originally as temple decorations, Shiwan figurines became popular in the West in the 18th century and have been export artifacts ever since. The city of Shiwan is famous for artistic, hand crafted ceramics including vases, tiles and figurines. Shiwan ceramics are highly collectible and capture the culture, history and folklore of China.
