When my Bissell $100+ upright decided to below up, I knew exactly what I wanted in a vacuum because of all the issues I had with that design. I have a dog and two cats, so the hair accumulates quiet rapidly and would clog the Bissell up rather promptly.
When choosing a good performing vacuum, most people would base their decision off of amperage (power), bags vs. bagless, width, price, filters, and features. However, I believe the most important thing to look at is the actual design. Bissell makes great vacuums with one enormous flaw, and that is the path the sucked up particles must travel - they often feature a severe 45 degree flex-tube bend directly from the lower brush. The least resistance that an item has (and air, for that matter) to the bin, the less chances that it will clog.
When choosing a vacuum, you should examine the pathway from the spinning brush to the bin. If there are any tight angles (the design flaw of Bissell's), you will likely have a clog. This will be compounded by the ridges of a flex tube. I looked at tons of vacuums in various stores before choosing this particular Dirt Devil for just that reason. It had the simplest path of any vacuum. Sucked up goods go from the bottom up a slight angle to a upward tube in the shaft of the vacuum and then a slight bend into the dirt container. I have not once had a clog with this design.
The Good:
- Great(!) suction for size.
- Lightweight.
- Decent build quality.
- Efficient dirt path.
- Good overall design.
- Filters can be cleaned by tapping them against something (outside!)
- Doesn't lose suction.
- Price, I paid $39.99 + tax at HD.
The Bad:
- The accessory hose for attachments must be disconnected from the lower spinner.
- The accessory hose has a smaller diameter and is therefore more susceptible to clogs.
- Small container, fills up quick (this thing sucks up a lot, might be a plus?).
- 12" instead of 15".
Overall:
I can't help but be completely satisfied with my purchase. "The Bad" listed above can be overlooked because of the very low price. If it wasn't for the efficient design on this unit, I would have given it four stars - but because they addressed all my previous issues, I gave it five stars for the price range of vacuums (12" width, less-featured units).
