This kit is great for beginners who really don't know much about painting or refinishing furniture. If you are more experienced with paint, you could probably save a lot of money by buying similar products separately. The kit is expensive for what you get. With one kit I painted a large and small dresser, a bookshelf and a vanity table, and I had enough left for 1 or two more pieces. I did buy spray primer before starting though, so two layers of the paint was sufficient. I'd definitely recommend this to save on paint or you will need 4 layers or more.
The ivory is a beautiful color and goes on easily even with the less than stellar brush that comes with it. After that dries, you use the sanding sponge in the kit to "distress" edges and a few surfaces of your furniture. You can do just a little edging or you can sand a lot of corners and surfaces down for a really weathered look. Then you use the finishing coat which seems a little bit like a stain. For a lightly distressed look, wipe it off with a damp cloth while it is wet. For a more heavily distressed look, wipe the finishing coat off with a dry cloth. I loved the color of the ivory and didn't want the stain to make it a lot darker, so I used a damp cloth and was thrilled with the results.
Don't depend on the "idea kit" in the book for any real ideas. All it does is list their other kits in other colors. That aside, it's really a great kit if you wanna give a room a new look without spending a ton of money. Also great for savvy yard sale/thrift store shoppers who can look beyond poor or ugly paint jobs on a piece of furniture to see a gem underneath. Can also be used to give old picture frames a nice shabby chic look. I'd definitely use it again, but you can only have so much ivory in a house. Looking to add some color now.
