I bought this unit to replace another electronic deadbolt that had a design flaw: the bolt itself was driven by the battery. This meant that I had to replace the 4xAA batteries about every 6 - 8 months, which isn't so bad since I used rechargeables, but the problem is that I'm in an old house and the door warps in winter and the deadbolt would bind. The battery powered lock didn't have the power to overcome the misalignment caused by warping. In the end I started carrying a key just so I could lock the door, which defeats the whole purpose of keyless entry.
This Schlage uses a superior design: the battery only operates a cam which either does or doesn't allow you turn the lock manually. That way instead of relying on a battery-powered motor to drive the bolt, it uses your wrist power. The result is that in winter I just pull on the door handle a little harder and flip the latch. It works just fine.
Another advantage is that since the battery only has to drive a small cam, it lasts much longer. The manufacturer says the 9-volt battery can last up to 2.5 years and I see no reason to disbelieve it.
Installation was easy enough and would have taken less than half an hour if it wasn't for another advantage: the bolt itself is much longer than the one I was replacing. This makes for a stronger lock, but I had to locate a chisel and deepen the hole behind the striker plate. I felt good about the increased strength of the door lock system.
The lock uses a 6-digit programming code to control a number of 4-digit entry codes so you can easily program a temporary number for short term visitors, but don't lose that code. It comes printed on the installation instructions, and I tucked the sheet away somewhere I can find it easily for reprogramming purposes. If you lose the code you're stuck: there's no way to retrieve it or reprogram the lock without replacing the entire unit. Existing entry codes will continue to work, but you won't be able to add new ones or change them.
The finish is smooth and flawless and looks like it will stand up to heavy use. I fully expect this lock to outlast the 10 years I used the last lock for.
