Tools and Hardware Reviews of Schlage BE365VPLY505 Plymouth Keypad Deadbolt, Bright BrassCustomer Review: Locked Out: Not any more Summary: 5 Stars
There's no doubt: I'm a geek. I love gadgets. But, they also have to work. The Schlage electronic deadbolt is just such a gadget. It earns it's keep by letting me get into and out of the house without having to fumble for my keys. It earns it's keep by letting family/friends/contractors whom I trust into my house without the extra step of having to deliver a key to them. They just enter a pre-programmed code entered at the factory or one that you specify. The lock feels secure and solid. Other similar locks are available from other manufacturers that seem less so.
Early one morning, as I was debating on whether I should get this lock, my step-son had to go to the hospital in the wee hours of the morning. It occurred to me that if my wife or I were home alone and we got hurt in some way and were not able to make it to the door, precious seconds might be wasted while the ambulance crew tried to gain entry. With this lock, you can give fire crews, etc. an entry code that is preset. This might be an important asset to folks who are caring for an elderly loved one or someone on hospice, etc. who's movement is restricted.
I do wish the installation instructions were a little better. Even so, it only took about 30-45 minutes to install. An email question about installation went unanswered. But, I'm certain that was a glitch.
All-in-all, this is a truly great product. I'm considering putting one on the back entry now. That way, even if the batteries on one deadbolt go out, I can still get in the other door.
Oh, and by the way, you can also use the keys that come with the deadbolt if the battery (premium alkaline 9-volt) does fail.
Now, where's the lock to check my retinal imprint...?
Customer Review: Schlage Keypad Deadbolt- wish I had installed this years ago Summary: 5 Stars
Great product. I purchased 2 from my locksmith and had him install them. Now my wife cannot lock herself out and we don't need to have a key hidden in the yard.
I bought these after we had a number of break-ins in my neighborhood. I never felt safe with a "hidden" key but my wife would lock herself out at least twice a week.
With these devices it does not occur.
Here are some added bonuses that were unexpected:
1. I never need a key. I can lock the front or back door and then if I'm working on a project and need to go back for a tool, I don't have to run around to the unlocked door. That used to make me crazy.
2. Temporary pass codes for the dogsitter. When I was on vacation I setup a code for my neighbor to check on the dogs. When I returned, I deleted the codes. No need to worry about all the "extra keys" I could have floating out there.
3. Emergency access. If I get stuck late at work (or in a true emergency) and need my son to stop by and feed the dogs I can just give him the code and he can get in.
Lastly the deadbolt locking mechanism is really easy to turn with your fingers on both sides of the door. It is actually easier than using a key.
I'm going to buy a third one for my garage door and then my entire house will be keyless. When I move, I plan to do the same in my next house.
---
Cost- I move a lot. Whenever I move into a new home, I call a locksmith and have him rekey all the exterior doors to a single key. For nearly the same price, I can replace all my locks with these. I'll be doing that from here on out.
Customer Review: Beware of "Standard" Hole Size Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this door knob to replace an older Schlage deadbolt, so I assumed that the hole in my door was the correct size. Older holes are about 1 1/2" diameter, but new ones, including the one needed for this Schlage keyless deadbolt are 2 1/8" diameter (see the Schlage website for hole dimensions and locations). The quality of the lock looks good and it feels sturdy, so I decided to keep it. After warnings from other websites about modifying your own door holes, I was planning to pay a lock person $75 to come to my house and drill out the hole in my metal door to the 2 1/8" diameter required for this deadbolt. I want a keyless lock since my middle school children keep losing/misplacing keys, getting locked out, and letting their friends know where our spare keys are. This one looks like a keeper, but I wish I didn't have to modify the door! (I didn't see any alternates on the Schlage website that required the smaller opening.)
Update: I decided to buy a $30 kit at a Lowes hardware store to drill the new hole myself since all the holes in my house will eventually need to be drilled out if we replace door hardware. The DeWalt kit (also sold on Amazon: DEWALT D180004 Bi-Metal Door Lock Installation Kit) had a 2 1/8" hole saw and a fixture for lining up the new hole in the correct position in the door. I took my time and practiced on a piece of wood first. I had no problem drilling through the metal/wood core door - my husband was impressed. Everyone loves the new keypad entry! It works well and nobody gets locked out anymore.
Customer Review: Convenient, economical security Summary: 5 Stars
I love the convenience of this lock and its antique finish companion for another outside door! My son was the first to install them at his new home and I was "instantly in love" with it. I can help him out with "house sitting" for repairs or deliveries, without a set of keys. I had to have this keyless lock system for my doors as well. No more worries about forgetten house keys! The obvious Schlage quality provides a sturdy product with easy to follow instructions for installation and setting of the codes. I appreciate having the security of being able to work out in the yard, with my doors locked, and no threat of lost or forgotten keys. This lock set is a real plus for working parents who have kids coming home from school (age appropriate for being home alone). Kids are not good at remembering to carry house keys, but are much better at remembering a 4 digit code that will allow entry into their secure home. For convenience, there is a key over-ride for these locks, in case of battery failure (the touch pad is battery dependant-my son has had his for 2 years and shows no signs of weakness). These locks have the ability to set temporary codes that will delete after a set number of uses or being manually deleted. This can be used for houseguests or other entrants without disturbing your permanent codes. There are newer, more advanced versions of this lock that can be monitored with your computer or smart phones, etc. No matter what the choice, Schlage keypad locks are a fabulous, easy to install solution for home security convenience.
Customer Review: One week review Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not a handy guy but since I replaced the handle without issue on our back door I thought I would give this a try. I was at the store looking for a deadbolt to replace the current one (someone lost a key and my wife got paranoid) as well as a remote keypad for the garage to let neighbors and friends who house sit in.
We saw the Schlage Keypad and since it was the same price as a new deadbolt and garage door keypad, we decided to try it.
Installation was straight forward, although the horizontal bar that conprises the actual bolt is thicker than my old Schlage deadbolt so the hole on the side of the door needed to be widened a hair. All of the pieces fit together snuggly and intuitively. I would recommend a quick read of the entire installation instructions as there are some important bits about setting up the unit when installing to insure proper function.
A week later, I forget that we didn't have it before. I don't even use the included keys (keyed entry still requires you to activate the unit by pressing the Schlage button, otherwise nothing happens when you turn the knob).
So far it's been a good buy.
