Tools and Hardware Reviews of Schlage BE365VPLY505 Plymouth Keypad Deadbolt, Bright BrassCustomer Review: Great Product Summary: 5 Stars
I recently set out to replace the dead bolt on my front door. I like the idea of having keyless entry. first went with the Kwikset version of this product thinking it would be cool to have a deadbolt that will automatically lock. Unfortunately this mechanism doesnt work well unless the door is perfectly flush with the door frame. This is rare since most doors have some weather lining around the frame, requiring the user to push/pull the door slightly to lock the dead bolt. Additionally the Kwikset was partially made of plastic and didn't have a solid feel. So I purchased the Schlage deadbolt. I was impressed with the solid feel of the set, it is completely metal, no plastic. I did make the mistake of not measuring the hole in my door, so I had to call a lock smith to widen the hole (I'm sure I could have done this but I'm lazy). The dead bolt was easy to install, and works really well. It requires a 9V battery which is included. I like the fact that it is a manual lock, perhaps the battery will last longer this way. All in all, I am happy with this choice and will likely stick with Schlage products. The price on Amazon is hard to beat.
Customer Review: no more keys! Summary: 5 Stars
My dad installed this for me and he had to make the hole for the lock a little bigger, and also made the hole for the strike plate deeper. This lock feels very solid and heavy. True that it might not be any safer than the previous deadbolt lock, I still feel better because it is more convenient for me to use it. The bolt is longer and the dust box certainly is safer than just the strike plate. I love this lock since I don't need key to lock the door when I leave in the morning with my hands full of bags for work. Also nice not to have to use key to unlock when I come home with groceries. Walking the dogs is also easier, one less item to carry. I am looking for another lock with handle to replace the one going to the garage and back door. Next stop is to install automatic garage opener. I love new gadgets with technology.
Even hubby is grudgingly using the codes which is much easier to use than the keys. He finally learned how to lock the door in one day! The first day he left the door unlocked because he doesn't remember how to lock it.
Customer Review: Look Mom, no key! Summary: 5 Stars
I am impressed with the quality of this Schlage electronic lock made entirely with metal inside and out. It is a little more expensive than some, but WELL WORTH IT. I defintely wanted this model that requires a simple twist to engage or disengage the deadbolt. Just press the "Schlage" button and twist to lock, or key in a code and twist to open. I see this as a BIG PLUS since the powered deadbolt models can run into problems if the deadbolt becomes misaligned with the doorframe plate. This can decrease battery life, or possibly burn out the motor (this happened to my daughter). SECURITY ISSUE: With this manual model, I know that the deadbolt is definitely engaged before I leave the house.
I am pleased that each number is assigned to its own key (10 keys on the keypad) whereas some electronic locks have 5 keys with 2 numbers assigned to one key. All programming options can be performed from the keypad, i.e., there is never a need to remove the inside cover. All in all, Schlage rules!
Customer Review: Schlage Keypad Deadbolt Summary: 5 Stars
First let me say that Amazon sent this quickly and for the lowest price because of the super saver shipping. We have wanted a keypad lock for some time, and after researching (both hands on and online), I selected the Schlage. The installation was very easy and took less than an hour start to finish. Much of the instructions may look intimidating, but common sense tells you there is only a couple of ways for correct installation. I only had to refer to the instructions a couple of times. Once in place, programming was quick and simple. The entry access code can be changed anytime and multiple codes are acceptable. We like the lock and the benefits of not worrying about forgetting the key and getting locked out anymore, which comes in extremely handy if you have school age kids. The only thing I can't speak to in the durability of the finish. Our lock is sitting on an exposed exterior door. Hopefully the brass finish will hold up to the elements over time. We are very pleased with this purchase.
Customer Review: Should have gotten one long ago. Summary: 5 Stars
I selected this version of the keypad lock because it did not use a little electric motor to move the bolt. I felt that that motor might wear out or get effected by weather (it gets COLD in northern Illinois). The Schlage uses the keypad to engage a manual turned hand key, similar to the way you lock a deadbolt inside. This hand turned method is much better than the battery powered motor in my case because the door has a soft weather stripping. The door must be pulled to compress the weatherstrip before the bolt will slide into place.
A little bonus, the keypad lights up.
Installation was fine, but then again I enjoy that type of thing. It came already programmed with two codes and I did not bother to change them or add others. Very sturdy materials, easy to use, simple to operate and looks like it will last. Of the similar options this has all the features I wanted.
Recommended.
