My computer is plugged into the control outlet. When I standby computer all those little power suckers, modem, cordless phone, printer, battery charger, speakers, etc. are turned off. Simple and effective. I don't know if it will ever pay for itself in energy savings, but it already has in good feelings. You need one of these.Customer Review: Perfect for desktop computers.

1 control outlet, 3 "always on" outlets and 6 switched outlets controlled by the control outlet. Just turn on the item plugged into the control outlet and the switched outlets turn on; turn off the item in the control outlet and the switched outlets turn off. I bought two of these units for my home theater and home office. Very easy to hook up. Lets me keep the DVR and amplified antenna for the home theater always on while shutting off "for real" all those other pesky components of mine. Great Product. Automatically switches off your peripherals when you switch off the contolled item. I plugged in my speakers and printers to the controlled outlets, my computer to the constant power and my monitor to the control outlet. This product works exactly as billed right out of the box. When my iMac "goes to sleep" it shuts down my external hard drives and when I go back to work the hard drives come back up. With the WiFi airport plugged into the non-switched receptacle it always is up for my iPad and Apple TV.
