In Nov or Dec 08, I heard a DJ on the radio say how she had reduced her power bill by 40% by unplugging things, especially TVs and PCs when not in use. I thought I would give it a try, and it worked. I had a peak power bill of $260, and the next month it was down to $160! Problem was, with PCs on desks and TVs in entertainment centers, it wasn't very easy to unplug them.
I started searching for smart power strips and came across these on Amazon. I bought seven for the house, and the power bill has stayed the same as when I was unplugging everything, but now all we have to do is turn off the "main" appliance on each power strip and it does the rest!

My husband was told by a big-box electronic retailer that he needed to purchase a $150 surge protector in order to get the best clarity for his new flat screen HD TV.
I wanted to see if that salesman was right and purchased this protector to plug in the TV, speakers, DVD player, Wii etc.
Well, not only does it work like a charm but the clarity of the TV is perfect! He loves being able to simply press On/Off on the TV and know that everything else will do the same. One button- so simple! Saves us electricity (i.e $$) and reduces our carbon footprint. Fabulous!

With my Kill-A-Watt, I discovered that my computer speakers use 15W even when they're not being used. I now have my monitor and speakers plugged into the Smart Strip, and have confirmed (with the Kill-A-Watt) that I'm saving some energy, and the Smart Strip will pay for itself in 7 months.
Also note that there are lots of models of Smart Strips. The "L" models are large (10); the "S" models are small (7). The "3" models are the simplest ones; the "4" models have a phone/fax/modem port; the "5" models have both a coax (tv) and phone/fax/modem port.

These power strips are wonderful - I have them on all my computers plus 2 seperate entertainment centers - what an easy way to save electricity without any extra effort - I have the entertainment center ones set so that when I turn off the tv it also turns off the stereo and game consoles attached to that tv - I put the dvr's on the constant on plug. On the pc's I have it set to cut power to monitors and speakers when the pc shuts down. All work great and were super easy to adjust sensitivity. I purchased 2 of these Smart Strips a year ago and saw an immediate, noticable reduction in my energy bills. I plugged one into a plasma TV, DVD, VCR, Cable box set up and plugged another into an elliptical trainer with additional media connections. I figure that my Smart Strip paid for itself within 2-3 months.
Honestly, my biggest issue with this product is that it isn't carried everywhere! Why aren't all power strips cabable of truly turning off attached appliances?
I highly recommend this product.
