Tools and Hardware Reviews of Smith's TRI-6 Arkansas TRI-HONE Sharpening Stones System.

Customer Review: Even sharpens a Shun dude!
Summary: 5 Stars

Yes, I just touched up my Shun elite Santoku with the hard stone, the knife will now treetop hairs and get all the little ones with one stroke. I had this sharpener for a few months now, but just started to really get my technique down. I first practiced on my cheaper knives. The trick with bigger knives is to only use a straight back and forth motion (block positioned in a north-south position). Use the back and forth motion on one section of the blade for a few strokes then move up, repeat. Flip the knife over, repeat. I start by doing the heel of the knife, then belly, then tip, flip/repeat. This is the same as those little hones that attach to your knife (if you know what I'm talking about). They essentially grind one bit of the blade at a time, just like my method for large knives. You can still pull a large knife across the stone in one stroke to finish the edge, but I don't recommend it for any meaningful sharpening of a larger knife. Now small knives are a different story, there is plenty of surface to do the whole blade in one swipe. So I give this a 5 out of 5 for price and effectiveness if you know how to use this technique.

Customer Review: This does an amazing job sharpening knives, and it's easy to use
Summary: 5 Stars

Not sure what more I can say about this - it makes sharpening knives easy and quick, and it does a truly excellent job of it with little fuss or muss.

I like the edge I get off this much better than the edge that I'd get when I took my knives into the butcher to have him sharpen them. He clearly used an industrial knife sharpening machine that removed a lot more metal and sharpened at an angle I didn't like.

I'm much more comfortable about the longevity of my pricey chef's knives now that I can sharpen them myself.

The stones and the device are very solidly constructed, and it stays in place when I'm sharpening. This ought to last far longer than I, and so could very well be something that I'll have to include in my will.

Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Serious Tool
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this system to sharpen my kitchen and hunting knives. It is without doubt the best sharpening system, I have ever used. It has three stones which allow you to sharpen a knife in virtually any condition, the guide allows you to keep the proper angle while sharpening. You start on the course stone, then the medium, and then fine. I reconditioned an old knife I had in the garage and it is razor sharp. Once you get the hang of it, with a little practice you can put an edge on a blade that will easily cut paper. My only complaint is that the honing oil that comes with it is a very small container. Be sure and purchase additional honing oil.

Customer Review: Put an edge on a butter knife.
Summary: 5 Stars

Or at least close enough. I use this tool to maintain both my professional knives for work and collection at home. I've used it on knives with varying degrees of sharpness and bevel- and all come out razor sharp. As mentioned in the other reviews, the base's grip can be a little dangerous or annoying - however the problem was solved with either a wet towel or a rubber grip mat. I was used to a much larger tri-stone when I received this one, but adapting to the smaller size wasn't such a big deal. Completely satisfied with this product, especially for the price.

Customer Review: Tri-Hone TRI-6 Arkansas Sharping Stone Set
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using sharping stones for a while and always disliked having 3 speprate stones to worry about storing and drying. The Tri-Hone set takes that issue away by putting them all in one easy to work with little dude. This set's design is awesome for the fact the stones are never sit on a surface, so drying excess oil or water off is easy. Each side is clearly marked so it is really hard to get confused. I got to say if you are in the market for a new set of Arkansas sharping stones try these out.
