An average lot (7,000 to 10,000 square feet) can be cut in just one charge of the Solaris' highly efficient batteries. The included batteries only take 12 hours to charge, or they can be charged in four to five hours with the Rapid Charger Station sold separately. Charging can be done on board the mower with the built-in charging plug, or you can remove the batteries and recharge them using the included off-board charging cradle. Also, a built-in LED battery level indicator on the mower keeps you in-the-know about your battery power levels.

Customer Review: I wish my neighbors had one!

I have had the Solaris since May of 2009. After two summers of use, I can't say enough good things about it!
The first thing that you will notice is that it is QUIET. I know that most electric mowers are quieter than their gas counterparts, but I can walk along with this mower running and have a conversation with someone on the sidewalk at about the same volume as talking to someone in my car on the highway. I used to wear earplugs to mow the lawn with my gas mower, but it just isn't neccessary with the S21HB.
The next thing for me is the smell. Mowing the lawn is so much more pleasant without the billowing cloud of white smoke on startup and the sickly burning scent that lingers for hours on the lawn, and sometimes days in the garage, when I used to mow with my gas mower. I didn't even know it was there until I had to use my old mower once when I forgot to charge the batteries for this one. yikes, what a difference.
Those two things are the largest quality of life issues from the mower. My neighbors don't go inside while I'm mowing anymore since they can barely hear it across the two yards. I wish I could say the same when THEY mow. Another minor convenience... no more trips to the gas station to fill up the portable gas tanks.
While those benefits are common to any electric, my mower IS much quieter than the Black & Decker electric that one of my neighbors bought at about the same time, and it seems to cut the grass more evenly too. I only have problems with the evenness of the cut if the lawn is particularly long, or very wet, and that brings me to one of the CONS.
It is NOT as powerful as a gas mower. If you like to wait two or three weeks to cut your grass, it will eat up a LOT of battery, and even grind to a halt every now and then. Mowing right after it rains has the same effect, so if you live somewhere that it rains more often then not, it may not work as well for you. When I DO have to mow longer grass, I usually mow it twice, once on the highest setting of the mower, and once on lower setting. If I have to cut wet grass, I either wait, or I lift the front of the mower every few feet to let it spit out the clumps of grass. Obviously, that is NOT a good idea if anyone else (kids) is out on your lawn with you as you could kick a rock or branch in their direction.
The Battery life has been great. I have not noticed an appreciable decline in performance in my two years of use. I have a 1/4 acre lawn, and it manages the whole lawn without any problem. If I have to mow twice, I put the batteries on charge in between. About 1-2 hours to charge back to full; 30-45 minutes to discharge. Of course, you could get two or more sets and solve that problem. The solar charger supposedly takes a little longer, but I don't have it, so I can't comment on that.
I always mulch the grass, and this mower performs that function very well. I usually can't find any grass clippings after I have finished the lawn, and when I can, if I run over them a second time with the mulcher, they are gone. The bag is a little small, so if you're a bagger with a big lawn, that might be a consideration.
One CON that is a little frustrating... The motor of this thing sticks up and hits low lying bushes and tree branches, and it just LOOKS top heavy. I haven't had any issues with resilience to impact though, and it is still tight and strong, so that's more of an aesthetic problem than a practical one.
Overall, I highly recommend this product. I have enjoyed it greatly, and I hope Solaris keeps making quality mowers. I don't remember the exact conversion, but I remember that mowing my lawn with a gas mower was equivelent to driving a vw bug without polution control for 100+ miles. The more quality electric mowers, the better!
