Tools and Hardware Reviews of SPT SF-608R Portable Evaporative Air Cooler

Customer Review: Inexpensive cooling
Summary: 4 Stars

First off, this is NOT an air conditioner. If you expect your room to be freezing cold, this is not the product for you. It's a COOLER, and it does its job very well. It works by evaporating water. Try soaking a T-shirt, wringing it out, and putting it on wet to get the effect. It doesn't work very well in humid areas, but it works GREAT where the air is dry.
I'm in southern California, where the humidity varies pretty widely. I place the cooler six or eight feet from my chair, and on the hottest days I'm quite comfortable.
Benefits:
* it's about 1/5 the cost of an air conditioner
* operating expense is a fraction of the cost of air conditioning
* neat features! (timer, sleep function, etc.)
* remote control

Drawbacks:
* it's not freezing cold like air conditioning.

Customer Review: Excellent product for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this item in anticipation of a hot summer. Our computer room gets very hot during the summer. Tried a normal fan, but it was only pushing hot air around.

Pros - good construction. LIke the drain plug on the bottom and the remote control. Though I'm still int he winter here in Las Vegas, I expect it well keep my computer room cooler by at least 5 degrees. Surpentin, company that makes the cooler, has excellent customer service.

Cons - the coolers pump was moving water through the back mesh, thus not cooling. However, I email the company and they immediatly sent me back another cooler and paid for all return shipping.

I would recommend this item if you have a small room that needs cooling. Any other cooler cost a lot more.

Customer Review: An alternative to AC
Summary: 4 Stars

Living in the south parts of Colorado, this cooler does a decent job. Obviously, the air from this machine is no where near as cold as an actual AC, but it is definitely a lot cooler than a generic electric fan. Literally just plug it in and add some cold water (and ice for a bit more cooler air). The fan itself blows hard enough to be felt at less then 10 feet away and can bring the temperature down a good 10 or so degrees. Just remember that this machine is meant for small areas and most likely won't cool down a large room. Also, for some reason if it really bothers you, after long periods of using this cooler, your room tends to smell like water.

If you're looking for something better than an electric fan, that isn't a AC, try this cooler out.

Customer Review: Portable and easy
Summary: 4 Stars

My wife and I were looking for a portable unit that would cool us off a bit in the afternoon and especially while we slept; one that was cost effective and affordable. We've been using the SPT SF-608R for about two months now and it's been good. Doesn't get as cold as we'd hoped, but it is not an air conditioner; it uses evaporation to lower the temperature - the addition of ice quite increases its effectiveness.
It is easy to move around, it is very easy to use and it definitely takes the edge off. We're satisfied with the purchase and happy to have it around.
In fact, it's getting hot in here so I'm going to go turn it on right now...

Customer Review: Good value, ok cooling
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this cooler hoping that it would do it's job because I live in an extremely dry climate. I was a bit disappointed that it took a long time and didn't smell good. It lowered the temp 4 degrees at 25% humidity. However, they're not joking when they say it costs less to operate than a 60-watt lightbulb. Also, the air it blew out was icy when I had it set on the slowest fan setting. The problem is that the low fan speed is really slow. There is also a high and medium settings, although high isn't very cool. In the end I just settled for medium.
All in all this product is a great value but the cooling isn't so great.
