Tools and Hardware Reviews of Sylvania 29149 13-Watt 120-Volt Compact Fluorescent MiniTwist Lamp with Medium Base, Warm White, 12 Pack #CF13ELMTWSTCVPCustomer Review: Not the best option Summary: 2 Stars
I have used these bulbs a few times before and can tell you that they are horrible options for lighting.
Good:
*Save money on power
Bad:
*Poor lighting compared to incandescent, this is the same as office lighting, only you get the flickering dull light in the convenience of your own home.
*They can last about half the time as incandescents, so that money you save in power you are paying in buying new ones.
*They contain Mercury, as in the liquid metal. You are not supposed to throw these in the trash, they NEED to be taken to a recycling center to remove the mercury. I imagine most will not do this and just throw them in the trash...so now we have a ton of mercury in the ground.
*These do NOT work with dimmer switches, so if you want these to set the romantic mood in your bedroom or dining room you will just see a strobe light until it explodes.
If you really care about the environment, which is probably why you are looking at these, then keep the incandescents or look into LED lights. They use less power than fluorescents and put out a whiter light.
Customer Review: Look Closely at Comparable Wattage Summary: 2 Stars
I grew up in the "house of dark." My parents were immigrants who also suffered through the depression so electricity and phone bills (luxuries!)were closely watched. In response I have always desired a very bright environment. I have 7 lamps and track lighting in a 12x18 living room + eating el. Maybe I didn't read closely but I somehow thought these bulbs were equivalent to 100 watts which is my absolute lowest. The basic message is that if you want to go green but maintain a high level of artifical light closely read the comparable wattage. My son and DIL have inherited "light deprivation decorating" so they will be the recipients of this order.
Customer Review: Dissapointed with Sylvania Quality control Summary: 2 Stars
I bought a 2-pack of Sylvania Candelabra base CF at Lowes. One bulb was bad. I took them back and bought two 2-packs. From these 4 bulbs, one of them was bad. I then bought a 3-pack of Standard base Sylvania CF bulbs at Home Depot. One of these three bulbs was bad.
I was reluctant to purchase the no-name brands but it is apparent that the Sylvania brand is a piece of crap. Another gotch is that if you buy a multi-pak and one is bad you have to return all the bulbs. If you buy them in single packs you pay a lot more.
I'd stay away from Sylvanias until they do something about their QC.
Customer Review: Not a perfect solution Summary: 2 Stars
CF bulbs CANNOT be just thrown away. They MUST be treated as toxic waste. Will everyone remember? Is "Toxic" the new "Green"? No, not really. We are just trading one problem (high energy consumption) for another (toxic pollution of our watershed).
I hate working under fluorescents, and would rather live in the dark than populate my house with cold, 60Hz flickering light.
Customer Review: Do not buy Sylvania Summary: 1 Stars
I have over one hundred light bulbs in my house. I have replaced about 90 of the incandescent bulbs with CFLs. I started about 3 years ago and bought some off brand and GE bulbs. About a year and a half ago I started buying the Sylvania bulbs. Within a couple of months, a bulb burned out. It was a Sylvania. I figured out of 90, one failure could be expected. A month or so later, a second one burned out. It too was a Sylvania. After a year and a half, I have had over 15 of the original 45-50 Sylvaina bulbs burn out. The ones I put in 3 years ago from various other manufacturers are all still going strong. People have said it depends on where the bulbs are installed but the bulbs that have burned out in my home were in ceiling fans, bathrooms fixtures, table lamps, and floor lamps. They were in all types of rooms so there was not a consistent source of the problems.
I went to the hardwar store where I purchased most of the bulbs to see what I could do about replacing the faulty ones and they told me to contact the manufacturer. After contacting Sylvania, they commented that they would replace the bulbs only if I could produce a copy of the original receipt. I did not have one so I was out of luck. In addition to the ones that quit working, I have now had two of the Sylvania bulbs burn out and spew smoke throughout the rooms they were in. One in a ceiling fan and the other in a bathroom.
I am a believer in reducing energy consumption and think that the CFLs have a place but I will never buy another Sylvania bulb. Check out other brands before using these, the failure rate is just way too high. Oh yeah, keep your receipts.
