Tools and Hardware Reviews of US Forge 108 Shaded #5 Economy Cup Brazing GogglesCustomer Review: Great Deal! Summary: 4 Stars
I just bought a cheap refurbished 20amp arc welder, and guessed that I would need better eye protection to go with it. Most cheap welders only ship with a mask you have to hold to your face, so right away the goggles are useful to free up your hand.
I was led to believe on another site that any shade from #4-#6 would be good protection from a low powered arc welder. These are #5, but seem to be a bit too light (the #10 shades on the mask included with the welder were much too dark. Even with the arc going I could barely see anything.) Fortunately the lenses are replaceable, so I will be getting something darker eventually. I've used them as they come for a few days, and haven't had any eye pain, so they are definitely better then nothing.
The replaceable lenses bring me to another point. I was a little worried after reading other reviews about the bead nose-bridge. People were saying that you need to use pliers to adjust them and that they can slip through from the slightest pressure. Do not use pliers to adjust them! If you unscrew the lenses, you can take out the beads and re-insert them at the right length without weakening or deforming the plastic.
All in all I am very happy. I would give it a 5 if it came with a few different lenses, but that's not a big deal.
Customer Review: Adjustable, usable, semi-comfortable Summary: 4 Stars
The lenses are removable. Twist off, with a tinted lens and clear lens inside. So if you're getting these to mod the lenses into IR vision/costume goggles, they should work. Very cool mad scientist look.
The nosepiece is just a piece of metal bead chain(like they use to chain the pen to the countertop at a bank). I suspect it will break. I'll probably replace it with a piece of leather lace. I don't have a huge head, and was able to adjust it to the right size easily.
Customer Review: screw those stupid ravers! Summary: 4 Stars
This product works fine a little fogging of the lenses occurs in the winter if working outdoors or in a cold shop. ( I saying working since ravers who buy these for there stupid drug parties have no real purpose for them other than the probably are to sensitive to smoke, how ironic) but yes they work accetlyn or propane torches alike.
Customer Review: They Get the Job Done Summary: 4 Stars
These are simple plastic goggles that will keep you from being blinded while welding and brazing. They do their job well enough. They do have considerable promise as part of a costume, however.
Customer Review: Faulty bridgepiece Summary: 3 Stars
This was bought as a costume piece. It arrived very quickly, in just a few business days, in adequate packaging. The goggles contain two set of lenses, a clear set and a shaded set, which can be easily removed and replaced.
The only problem is that the bridgepiece (the part that connects the two halves just above the nose) consists of a string of metal beads (sorry, I'm not sure of the correct term) that thread through a hole on each side of the two halves, connecting them, and through the small black tube shown in the picture. This string does NOT hold. The goggles will sit on your face or head just fine, but the slightest stretching (for example, when you're pulling the goggles off or putting them on) will pull the metal beads out of the holes on the sides of the goggles, breaking the connection between the two halves. It requires needlenose pliers to fix and you have to take a lot of care when putting the goggles on and taking them off so as not to tug on the string of metal beads at all, otherwise the goggles will break again.
As a costume piece that will only be worn a few times, it is a mild annoyance. If you were actually planning on using this for welding or any sort of work- or hobby-related activity, I would imagine that this would get old very fast.
